Every December comes Heart of the Hamptons’ most highly anticipated fundraising event of the year in Southampton—the Polar Bear Plunge! It’s a time to make a difference in the community by coming together and giving back (and getting frigid together, of course). Or as Heart of the Hamptons likes to say, “Get freezin’ for a local reason!”
The 18th annual polar bear plunge will take place at Coopers Beach in Southampton on Saturday December 11th. More than 300 local neighbors come together to support these causes near and dear to the Southampton community. Proceeds from the event will benefit the year-round Food Pantry and Assistance Programs. These organizations serve more than 1,400 families in the Town of Southampton. Molly Bishop of Heart of the Hamptons says, “In addition to offering weekly grocery pick up to all those in need throughout Southampton Town, we also do everything we can to ensure each family has a secure home with heat and lights and other basic essentials.”
Talk about a great reason to get freezin’, indeed.
Anyone can be part of the effort and make a difference whether participating in that chilly dip into the Atlantic, being a spectator, sponsor, or donating to the cause. All donations and support for the event can make a difference to so many families in our wonderful and unique Hamptons community. Heart of the Hamptons would also like the public to know, “The annual Polar Bear Plunge is our biggest fundraising event of the year. In the past, proceeds provided for nearly half of our annual budget. With the dramatic increase in need, this is no longer possible. But the success of the Plunge is a major factor in what we will be able to do for our community in the coming year!”
The Plunge has taken on a newfound importance this year since so many families have been struggling amid the COVID-19 pandemic. It will take a lot of time and effort to recover from something that has had a huge impact on the world at large. Donors and sponsors who contribute generously to this event are having a real effect on what Heart of the Hamptons is able to accomplish, whether it be helping to provide food for local families, medical transportation, or assisting with rent and utilities. Every little bit helps, and you can have fun and create memories with your community while making a difference—a win-win!
For the Polar Bear Plunge event itself, participants are welcome to enter individually or as a team. The entry fee is $25 per participant, and after registration you will be invited to set up your fundraising page. Share it with friends, family, and on any social media platform! The fundraising goal this year is $350,000. Let’s make that number a reality as we embrace the cold.
Molly with Heart of the Hamptons says, “It’s one of the most fun events in the Hamptons all year! Come, bring your friends, wear a costume (or not), jump in the ocean, or support a plunger. All are welcome!”
Time to make a difference, spread some cheer, and take the plunge this holiday season!
Those who would like to participate can sign up and collect pledges of support from sponsors (friends, family, co-workers, etc.), donate, or learn more at https://heartofthehamptons.org/polar-bear-plunge/
