Bay Street Theater has announced their 2022 Mainstage Season. Assistant Artistic Director, Will Pomerantz expressed the enthusiasm both he and Artistic Director Scott Schwartz have for this season’s shows.
In an exclusive Hamptons.com interview Pomerantz said, “We are all completely excited at Bay Street to be presenting our first full mainstage season in over three years. The summer will be a wonderful mix of comedy, drama and musical theater, with something for everyone!”
The first production is WINDFALL May 31–June 19.
It is written by Scooter Piets and Directed by Jason Alexander (of epic Seinfeld Show.) It is a comedy. The show has five office workers in Columbus, Ohio toil under the heavy hand of a maniacal boss and dream of a better life. When the boss’s antics become too much to bear, they bet their every last cent on a one-billion-dollar lottery jackpot. But the prospect of winning brings out the worst in these best friends. A dark, hilarious comedy that delves into how far any of us would go in our desire to have it all and live the American Dream. Windfall is produced by special arrangement with John Yonover and Ken Davenport.
Pomerantz said, “Written by Scooter Pietsch and directed by Jason Alexander, this laugh-out-loud office comedy brilliantly satirizes our desire to have it all and tell our terrible boss where they can put it. ‘The Office’ meets ‘Survivor’!”
The next presentation will be ANNA IN THE TROPICS June 28–July 24
This show by Nilo Cruz is Directed by Marcos Santana. Bay Street describes this show by saying, “Nilo Cruz’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Anna in the Tropics, centers on a sultry and steamy cigar factory in 1929 Tampa, Florida, where the lives of a Cuban-American family are challenged by the vices and temptations that surround them. The factory owner, Santiago, wrestles with a gambling addiction that’s emboldened by his half-brother, while his daughters, unhappy in their respective relationships, long for the affection of the factory’s handsome lector. Romance, lust, and jealousy collide as the family confronts the discontent in their lives, as a wave of modernization threatens to dispel the very traditions, they hold dear.
Will Pomerantz is all in on this show. He said, “This Pulitzer-Prize-winning drama by Nilo Cruz, set in Florida in 1929, is a gorgeous play of passion and cigars. Factory workers, entertained during their shift by a man who reads chapters of Anna Karenina to them, find their lives changed by this book and its handsome reader.”
The last show of the 2022 season is RAGTIME August 2–August 28
The Music is by Stephen Flaherty and the lyrics are by Lynn Ahrens. With the Book by Terrence McNally, it will be Directed by Will Pomerantz. This production will give east enders an opportunity to rediscover America, with this epic musical adaptation of E.L. Doctorow’s classic novel that captures the American experience at the turn of the 20th century. The story is of the worlds of a wealthy white couple, a Jewish immigrant father and his daughter, and an African American ragtime musician that intertwine in this sweeping musical about America’s Golden Age.”
Will Pomerantz said this about RAGTIME, a show he will be directing. He said, “Considered by many to be one of the great Broadway shows of the last fifty years, RAGTIME will continue Bay Street’s tradition of innovative musical productions, brought to you by the same team that created Bay Street’s record-breaking production of EVITA!”
