Calling all East End word wizards. Put your spelling skills to the test during the 9th Annual Scrabble “Fun”Raiser, held in support of the Hampton Bays Middle School Scrabble Club, on Sunday, March 10.
Once again, the Hamptons-based Scrabble team has made the cut and will be competing against fellow students during the New England School SCRABBLE Championship and North American School Scrabble Championship. Proceeds from the 9th Annual Scrabble “FUN”Raiser will benefit the Hampton Bays Middle School Scrabble teams attending North American School Scrabble Championship in Philadelphia.
This year’s competitors hail from Hampton Bays Schools and East Quogue School district. Contenders will include 10th grader Holly Anderson, 8th grader Christian Pensa, and 7th graders Matthew Papajohn, John Hilbert and Taylor Tureski.
“Join us for an afternoon of classic word game fun with a twist – while helping teams from Hampton Bays and East Quogue Schools on their way to the New England School Scrabble Championship and North American School Scrabble Championship in April,” Kathy Hummel relayed.
The friendly competition, which will be held from 12 to 4:30 p.m. at the Hampton Bays Middle School Cafeteria, isn’t your average Scrabble throw down. Participants will play as a team of two. It can be two students, two adults, or even a combination. Teams will compete in three games, and if you don’t have a partner, the event organizers will match you with one.
And, that’s not the only twist. Those that pre-register will be privy to special word lists and playing tips. The final mix up will be offered during the tournament. When a team gets stuck, they can purchase a vowel, a sneak a peek at the word list or even get a tip from an expert.
The tournament is open to the community (those in 4th grade and older). The suggested donation is $15 per person and $30 per team for advanced registration. On the day of, the entry fee is $20 per person or $40 per team, which includes lunch.
Hampton Bays Middle School Cafeteria is located at 70 Ponquogue Avenue in Hampton Bays. To pre-register, contact Kathy Hummel at 631-872-8434 or [email protected].
