Sag Harbor Cinema has been a hub in the Hamptons community for more than a century. First starting out as a burlesque theater in the 1890s, it evolved into a theater where moviegoers could enjoy the cinema by the 1930s, and it has been in operation ever since.
After this landmark theater was nearly destroyed by a fire in 2016, their fundraising efforts and support from the local community allowed rebuilding to begin. There was much construction delay, and then delay due to the pandemic, but Sag Harbor Cinema officially reopened their highly anticipated, new and improved three-story building in June 2021.
One of the upgraded additions made to this historic theater was The Green Room. The Green Room is Sag Harbor Cinema’s bar, located on the third floor. Since the theater used to be two stories, The Green Room is a bonus experience for ticket holders and members to enjoy. It’s a cozy and vibrant space that is open every night with specials, wine tastings, trivia nights, and intimate shows. The Green Room has added a unique vibe to the theater that didn’t exist before rebuilding, making it two different experiences in a sense.
According to The Green Room’s mission on the Cinema’s site, they say, “The Green Room is our take on the waiting lounge for actors. It is a space created to escape your daily performances, sit back and relax, enjoy delicious libations and the best views from atop Sag Harbor. Start every evening with soaking in the magnificent sunsets from the Truffaut Terrace.” These rooftop sights can’t be found anywhere else in the Hamptons, and they simply can’t be beat, creating an ambiance that adds to the experience when stopping in before or after a film! The third-floor spaces at the Cinema are even available to rent for special events.
The menu at The Green Room is fun and humorous and what you might expect from a bar that operates in a theater. Their drink menu features cocktails such as “G&T Phone Home,” “May the Spritz Be with You,” “Once Upon a Time in Mule-i-co,” and many other clever movie-related puns transformed into delightful beverages. Not only are these drinks theme-appropriate but they are delicious and varied wide so everyone can find something to enjoy! The bar also offers mocktails (equally appropriately named), wine, and beer. They have a small food menu available that features a spinach and feta stuffed pretzel, cauliflower tempura, and a few other delectable bites.
The Green Room has become a staple experience for anyone stopping by Sag Harbor Cinema. It’s an exclusive, unmatched option for ticket holders to be able to enjoy the ambiance and views of The Green Room before or after their shows, making the evening into much more than a showtime experience only.
