The final talk of the Artists Speak series at The Art Barge will be on Wednesday, September 5 and feature Peter Spacek.
“Peter Spacek is an ideal close to the season of Artists Speak, coming as it does after ‘Tumbleweed Tuesday,'” Esperanza Leon, Administrative Coordinator, The Victor D’Amico Institute of Art / The Art Barge, noted. “His cartoons are a comical take on the East End, perfect encapsulations of local situations in drawing and text.”
Born in Germany, raised in California, his love of drawing brought him to New York to pursue a career editorial illustration. Montauk and the surf pulled him even further to the east.
His witty yet whimsical style has been seen in many major newspapers and magazines as well as children’s books, animation and advertising. He currently the cartoonist for The East Hampton Star and has a line of cards and apparel with the “Ditch Ink” brand.
Amongst his many hobbies, he creates fine scrimshaw art on recycled surfboards.
He has had several solo shows on the East End including, OutEast Gallery in Montauk, Neoteric, The Southampton Arts Center, and The Springs Invitational. Known in the surf community for his drawings and travel sketchbooks in the Surfer’s Journal, his first show at Bessel Surf Gallery, La Jolla, introduced his scrimshaw images to the west coast, which led to an extended solo exhibition at The California Surfing Museum.

During Artists Speak, Spacek will chat with Curatorial Assistant, Registrar, and Lewis B. Cullman Associate for Museum Education at the Guild Hall Museum of East Hampton, Casey Dalene who specializes in emerging and mid-career artists, particularly those who are living on the East End. Dalene has worked with many East End galleries including, Elizabeth Dow Studio, Sara Nightingale, Markel Fine Arts, Roman Fine Art, and RJD Gallery. This work is culminated in her online art gallery, created in 2016, artUNPRIMED.
“His talk with Casey Dalene will better acquaint the public with his technique and share more about his talents beyond editorial illustration,” Leon shared.
The discussion will include an audience Q&A and will be followed by a brief reception.
“Join me to talk about the art of the line, the simple power of the pen, and the process of turning a thought into an image that says something interesting!” Spacek added.
General admission is $20 and the entry fee for friends of The Art Barge is $18. Artists Speak will take place from 6 to 8 p.m.
