On Tuesday, the weather was pushing the high 50s in the Hamptons. I happened to be in Amagansett and was just leaving Romaine Gordon’s open houses at Handy Lane, so of course I had to check out the beach at Georgica in East Hampton.
I was stunned, not just by the beauty, but by the weather! There was no wind, the sun was shining, the ocean was calm, and there was almost nobody there. It was a perfect Hamptons beach day, but nobody showed up to the beach. I decided to take a walk.
The scene was surreal. I didn’t even wear a jacket and was completely comfortable. Like any other winter day, there was nobody on the beach for as far as the eye could see except for the occasional dog walker, but it didn’t feel right.
My face wasn’t stinging from the cold, I didn’t feel like I was lugging along against a sharp wind, in fact, everything was the opposite. It was beautiful, it was peaceful, it was sunny, IN FEBRUARY!!!
I made a point to enjoy it and not worry too much about climate change.
Have I ever been on the beach in February before and it was this warm? I….I think so. Yes. Yes, there has definitely been oddly warm weather, I can remember plenty of winters with no snow, but this felt a little ridiculous and at the same time, amazing.
Enjoy it while it lasts.
