Jean and Martin Shafiroff unveiled their new home – and their new dog Rosie – Saturday night, with a large cocktail party overlooking the water, in anticipation of the Stony Brook Southampton Hospital 60th Annual Summer Party, to benefit The Jenny and John Paulson Emergency Department. Jean Shafiroff and Greg D’Elia are this year’s Chairs of the President’s Committee.
The Shafiroff’s are finally back in their new home after razing the old one. The light and beautifully decorated estate includes such “splashy” features as a high ceilinged, glassed indoor pool and hot tub, Martin’s final salvo in an all too common battle with Canada Geese. The house was two years in the making. Rosie the rescue – another dog daughter Elizabeth had rescued for Mary to pamper, (from South America as part of the Global Strays charity she founded with Lindsey Spielfogal) – had only been with them for eight days. But, all seemed settled in quite nicely.
Jean has been a famed fundraiser for the hospital ever since she first served as its Chair This year, John Catsimatidis and Bruce Mosler will be honored at their gala. Douglas Elliman Real Estate will serve as Corporate Chair. Chuck Scarborough will again emcee. Groove Society will provide music. And Catering & Decor will be by Lawrence Scott Events.
“As you all know, without a good hospital, you cannot live in a community,” Jean told her guests. “Something so special about our hospital is: it doesn’t turn away anyone. And this party has been going on for 60 years.”

“It’s not my father’s hospital anymore,” Kenneth Wright, Chairman of the Stony Brook Southampton Hospital Association Board, told the room. Ken remembered when his father, a doctor, first moved the family to Southampton, in 1948, “it was relatively unsophisticated,” with “the feel of a backwood little community hospital.
“That changed greatly over time,” he continued, “most recently with the help of many friends: the Grusses, the Paulsons, Susan Allen, the Davis’ (the Ed & Phyllis Davis Wellness Institute for integrative medicine), Julie Ratner (the Ellen Hermanson Breast Center), and the Phillips family, about to open up the cancer center on the highway. We have a hybrid operating room where we can perform heart procedures we never imagined could be done here before. We’ll be doing state of the art radiology in the new cancer center. And we’re starting an effort now to reimagine health care delivery on the East End of Long Island.” As good as it’s gotten, Ken looks forward to the day when “my children are going to say, ‘it’s not my father’s hospital any more,’ and they’re going to be right!”
In the past year, CAO Bob Chaloner added, the Stony Brook deal “came together,” facilitating a fully-operational cardiac catheterization laboratory, which has already saved lives here on the East End. The hospital was also designated American Heart Association Gold Status for its stroke program.
The long range goal? To put a new hospital on the Stony Brook College Southampton Campus. And that is only 250 million dollars away.
