The 39th annual Shelter Island 10K/5K Run and Walk will take place on Saturday, June 16 at 5:30 p.m. to benefit East End Charities. The community favorite race follows a USA track and field certified course and this year’s race will welcome former Olympian, four-time NYC Marathon winner and four-time Boston Marathon winner Bill Rodgers.

Following the race this year, there will be a Family Fun festival at the American Legion adjacent to the race finish. This complimentary event to all will include dancing in the street with DJ Twilo and local artisan food trucks including Noah’s, Scotto’s Pizza Truck, Opa on the Go, Mister Softee and Stars Café. Additionally, there will be a complimentary BBQ to all runners including hot dogs, hamburgers, veggie burgers, and more. Enjoy a cash bar, beer and wine tent from Montauk Brewing Company and Bottle Hampton. There will be local merchant shopping, a photo booth, kids area with carnival games and face painting, as well as raffle prizes. There’s something for everyone in the family!
“Nostalgia and memories are important. There are events that inspire a smile and positive thoughts. The Knicks of the past, Yankee Stadium and the great championship teams; Mets in ’69 & ’86, the Rangers and Islanders championships,” reflected Race Director Mary Ellen Adipietro.
The food trucks will be set up from 2:30 to 8:30 p.m. and entertainment by DJ Twilo will be offered from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The bounce house and children’s activities will be available from 2:30 p.m. to dusk and the silent auction and photo booth will be open from 2:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Proceeds from the race will go to support several East End charities, including the Shelter Island 10K Community Fund – who assists the community with philanthropic donations to community programs for Shelter Island, educational services including scholarships, project Excel, school trips and family services; East End Hospice – who offers home health care, with short-term hospital stay when needed, for the people of the Hamptons and surrounding Long Island towns; and Timothy Hill Children’s Ranch – who provides a safe haven for boys ages 10-21 who are in need of a therapeutic environment. Charity teams are encouraged and there will be a discount offered for teams of ten or more.
“In running the Shelter Island 10K is just this, a championship race for the ages. 39 years strong, both runners today and from years ago place this run at the top – deservedly so!” Adipietro added.
Registration for the 10K is $40 in advance or $50 on the day of the race. The 5K entry fee is $30 in advance or $40 on the day of the race. Admission is $15 for children and free for veterans.
Awards will be given for winners in the 10K, 5K run and 5K walk categories, with a $10,000 Runner’s Purse and course bonuses for the 10K.
