Hamptons-Based Animal Shelter Gives Rescues Facing Euthanasia A Second Chance

A group of innocent animals were facing a grim future at overcrowded shelters in New York City. However, Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation (SASF) swooped in and now the outlook of these sweet dogs and cat is looking much brighter.

The lucky new SASFans are Angel, a 7-year-old male Yorkie Mix, Brent, a 2-year-old male Orange Tabby, and Cheddar, a 9-year-old female Japanese Jindo Mix.

“The Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation will always step up and help at-risk animals at overcrowded municipal shelters whenever we can to provide them with the same level of compassionate care and medical attention that we provide to our community animals,” noted Jerry Rosenthal, SASF Executive Director.

When Angel’s previous owner was unable to take care of him because of personal illness, they brought the Yorkie Mix to Animal Care Centers of NYC. SASF says the lovable dog is “friendly, affectionate, playful, and excitable.”

Before arriving at SASF, Brent was seriously dehydrated, underweight, and showing symptoms of a severe upper respiratory infection. But, SASF is addressing all of these easily treatable conditions, and Brent is now on the road to recovery.

Cheddar, who was found on the streets, was on death row at the Animal Care Centers of NYC in Brooklyn. The senior animal was in awful shape and in desperate need of medical care. The Japanese Jindo Mix has an undetermined skin condition on her face, and Cheddar will now undergo medical testing to determine what is plaguing her and once diagnosed, the team at SASF will come up with a plan for the best medical treatment.

“It is so incredibly helpful when our people sponsor and donate to the care of these pets,” noted Kate McEntee, Director of Adoptions. “We never know what we are going to be facing, and having your support allows us to go above and beyond.”

Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation often aids the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals, who addresses overcrowded city shelters. Through the Alliance’s Wheels of Hope, SASF was able to transport Cheddar, Brent, and Angel from their former shelters to Southampton. Last year SASF was responsible for 228 rescues, and the organization saved 68 animals that were displaced from the hurricanes in Puerto Rico Florida and Texas.

“As the only open admissions shelter in the community, SASF does not discriminate based on breed, age or medical condition,” McEntee stressed. “When SASF has the room to help, they do – saving dogs from dire situations on Long Island, New York City, Puerto Rico and as far as China.”

Once these animals are fully healthy, they will be available for adoption. In the mean time, you can help out by sponsoring them here: southamptonanimalshelter.com.

Southampton Animal Shelter is located at 102 Old Riverhead Road West in Hampton Bays. For more information, call 631-728-7387 or visit southamptonanimalshelter.com.
