In between meetings in Westhampton, I found myself in need of a quick treat but not a full meal. As I wandered the town’s streets, a sign caught my eye: “Smoothies and More!” It led me to an alley adorned with charming metal tables and chairs, bustling with people sipping on smoothies and enjoying themselves. The atmosphere was vibrant, with laughter filling the air and the scent of fresh plants lending a springtime freshness. A disco ball twinkled overhead, casting playful reflections on the beautifully decorated countertops and constellation-adorned ceiling. Everywhere I looked, there was something captivating to behold.
Jennifer Neubauer, the owner, greeted me with a warm smile and helped me choose the perfect smoothie. She noticed my camera and struck up a conversation about my day and what I was photographing, making me feel like a regular. She made me the Jetty 4 smoothie, packed with pineapple, mango, spinach, yogurt, and coconut milk. Delicious.
I sat down with Jennifer. We delved into her journey in the culinary world, the inception of Local Provisions, and her life in Westhampton Beach.
Let’s go back to the beginning. Could you tell us how Local Provisions came about?
Jennifer: Well, I spent over 10 years in corporate America, and before that, I worked as a private chef, traveling between the Hamptons and New York City, cooking. However, I felt the need for more stability in my life, so I transitioned to corporate America, but my passion for food never waned.
I decided to channel that passion into something meaningful. I created my own blog, essentially teaching people about the origins of their food. This gardening blog, called Hook and Garden, became an extension of my creativity, allowing me to stay connected to food and share that connection with others while still maintaining the stability of my corporate job.
I was straddling both worlds, with one foot in corporate America and the other in my creative pursuits. Then, a little over a year ago, I was laid off from my corporate job, and my world was turned upside down. It felt like the universe was nudging me towards a change. That’s when I decided to take a chance on opening my own business.
I started looking for a space, but the one I initially had in mind was already taken. I contemplated going back to corporate America, but then the landlord called me, informing me that the previous tenant wanted to pull out of the lease. With just three weeks to turn the space around, I seized the opportunity and created what I would consider a physical manifestation of my blog, Hook and Garden, here at Local Provisions.
What’s the concept behind Local Provisions, and what sets it apart?
Jennifer: At its core, Local Provisions is a haven for wholesome food and community connection. As a local and a parent myself, I understand the struggle of finding healthy options, especially for those with dietary restrictions. So, I wanted to create a space where everyone could find something delicious and nourishing, regardless of their dietary needs. From avocado toast to cold-pressed juices, our menu reflects a commitment to wellness and inclusivity.
It’s inspiring to hear. Given your diverse offerings, what’s the scope of Local Provisions’ menu right now?
Jennifer: Currently, our focus is on salads, sandwiches, and smoothies alongside cold-pressed juices. We wanted to provide quick yet wholesome options for people on the go, and this seems to resonate with our customers.
The store design and decor are stunning. Did you design it yourself or hire a designer?
Jennifer: We wanted Local Provisions to not only nourish the body but also uplift the spirit. That’s why we collaborated with local artist Ricky Teevee to create an immersive experience for our customers. Our idea was to evoke an energetic vibe when you walk in, with a feeling of lightness and airiness. He created this beautiful artistic installation, from celestial constellations on the ceiling to shelves crafted from foraged spalted lumber off our local beaches, telling a local story through our location.
What are some of your favorite spots in Westhampton?
I love our local beaches- Jetty 4 and Roger’s.
