Sag Harbor Businesses And East End Community Coming Together For An Evening To Save The Cinema

Sag Harbor local businesses are coming together for a community-wide Cinema benefit on Sunday, July 16 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Long Wharf in Sag Harbor. All proceeds from Sag Harbor Partnership’s Big Tent: Party for the Cinema will benefit the effort to save the Sag Harbor Cinema, which tragically burned down last year.

Attendees will enjoy a delicious “Taste of Sag Harbor” from local restaurants and wine from Bedell Cellars, Channing Daughters, and Wolffer Estate. There will be entertainment for the entire family. Children can enjoy a face painting station and the resident raptor from the Wildlife Rescue Center. The Sag Harbor Fire Department will grill up a BBQ for everyone. To top it off, the great HOODOO Loungers will be entertaining the crowd all evening. This year’s Academy Award Sponsor is Baron’s Cove.

“The enthusiasm and commitment for the Cinema’s revival is nothing short of breath taking and inspirational,” said Jayne Young, Partnership Board member and head of the volunteer committee. “A great example of this is the number of volunteers who have come forward to work at the party rather than play at the party. Everyone is pulling for success.”

Local Sag Harbor galleries will be hosting an “Art for the Cinema Auction” hosted by Paddle8. Nearly 100 artists are offering their work for sale and a percentage of the proceeds will go towards saving the Cinema. Participating galleries include Grenning, Keyes, Monika Olko, Kramoris, Sara Nightingale, and Tulla Booth Galleries. Their work will be on display from 2 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 16.

Sag Harbor in Focus 2, an art show featuring contest winners of a teen photography contest from Pierson High School, will also be on view at the Sag Harbor Whaling and Historical Museum (200 Main Street, Sag Harbor) on Saturday, July 15 and Sunday, July 16, with an opening on Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m.

“The Sag Harbor Cinema project would not be where it is today without the help of our entire community,” said April Gornik. “Our Big Tent: Party for the Cinema is all about the community coming together to celebrate what we’ve accomplished thus far and get everyone excited for what’s still to come.”

Tickets to The Big Tent: Party for the Park are $50 for adults and $10 for children or $60 and $15 at the door.

The Sag Harbor Partnership (formerly Serve Sag Harbor) is committed “to the preservation and enhancement of the quality of life in Sag Harbor.” The 501(c)3 designated not-for-profit is currently in contract to buy the Sag Harbor Cinema, which will house a new not-for-profit, the Sag Harbor Cinema Arts Center (SHCAC), that is dedicated to “education, outreach, and programming for all the people of the East End, ​year-round.” So far the Partnership has raised $4,500,000 for the purchase and restoration of the Cinema and must raise $8 million overall by December 31, 2017.
