Bay Street’s Literature Live! brings the power of the word from the page to the stage – using the Common Core curriculum-based literature to create a unique learning experience by bringing professional theater artists together to present first class productions that also appeal to non-students. Since 2009, Bay Street Theater has brought great literary works to life on stage for school groups from Port Washington all the way to Montauk through Literature Live!.
Over the past seven years, more than 56 schools across Long Island have visited the Sag Harbor-based Theater to watch productions that include The Diary of Anne Frank, The Crucible, Of Mice & Men, and other notable titles. This year, with your help, another 27 school groups will attend Literature Live! for absolutely no charge.
“The schools’ attendance is at record levels and their response has been wonderful,” said Gary Hygom, Bay Street Theater’s Producing Director. “We are all looking forward to the public performances and to get a sense of an adult audience. These are beginning November 10th.”
Bay Street Theater’s 2016 Literature Live! program will present Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlett Letter from Monday, November 7th through Saturday, November 26th.

The Scarlett Letter is an account of the life of Hester Prynne, a married woman who becomes a social outcast. She conceives a daughter during her husband’s long absence after an adulterous affair. Hester is forced to wear the letter “A” for adultery on the breast of her gown and lives a life separate from society after she refuses to name the father.
Adapted for the stage by Scott Eck and Joe Minutillo, the cast includes Preston Truman Boyd, Kathleen Mary Carthy, Chloe Dirksen, Carolann DiPirro, Luke David Young, Nick Gregory, Daren Kelly, Jessica Mortellaro, Dakota Quackenbush, and Michael Raver. The production will feature original music composed by Felix Bird and a production team that consists of Hygom (Set Designer), Kate D’Arcy (Costume Designer), John Sullivan (Production Stage Manager), Mike Billings (Lighting Designer), and Michelle Tewksbury (Assistant Stage Manager).
The education program relies upon the generosity of the East End community and an extremely charitable group of donors has agreed to match all Literature Live! donations dollar for dollar, up to $50,000. To donate, visit www.baystreet.org.
