While the New Year is still a while away, Southampton-based photographer Danielle Leef has been thinking about 2017 for quite some time now. Each year, Leef creates a variety of calendars that highlight her photos.
“Creating these calendars has been a great source of enjoyment for me and it has been rewarding to have people show interest in my work,” said Leef. “These days many people use their smart phones to keep track of their schedules, but there is nothing like having a nice photo calendar to look at.”

Those who purchase the calendars will most likely recognize several of the photos’ centerpiece. “Most of these calendars cannot be found anywhere else because many of them focus strictly on scenes from the South Fork of Long Island,” Leef noted.

“The photos I choose for the calendars are ones that I hope will cause people to say ‘wow’ when they see them,” she said. “For the beach calendar I love the white puffy clouds and the beautiful blues of the water. Sunsets with purples and pinks and ones with reflections are my favorite. And nothing beats seeing ‘the big’ sun setting over the horizon over the ocean in the winter.”
Along with scenes from the Hamptons – like sunsets, beaches, and dogs on the beach – Leef also creates calendars that center around New York City, Central Park, flowers, boats, lighthouses, and windmills. “I try to look for flowers that are vibrant in color and enjoy the close-ups of these images,” she shared. “While we have so many beautiful gardens on the East End, I enjoy going to botanical gardens to look for flowers I might not be able to see here. These calendars make great gifts, especially for those who no longer live here, but want to be reminded of home.”
She also showcases the former “Boathouse” located on Meadow Lane in Southampton that was tragically ruined by Superstorm Sandy in her Boathouse Calendar.

While typically calendars have limited use, Leef’s can be used well after 2017 is over. “When the year is over, these pictures can be framed since the photos are glossy and made with quality cardstock,” she explained.
