It’s apple harvest season and on Saturday, October 1st you can celebrate one of the varied ways an apple can be used during the 5th annual Pour the Core: Hard Cider Festival at Long Island Sports Park in Calverton.
“Pour the Core Hard Cider Festival is sure to impress both cider lovers and fun seekers alike,” said event manager Kristyn Dolan.
From 12:30 to 4 p.m., cider connoisseurs and those that are curious about the beverage can explore a grand assortment of samples from local, national and international cider producers. Along with offering over 75 ciders that will be available for a taste tasting, guests can learn more about the beverage by attending a seminar that will cover the historic sip and pick up fare from popular Long Island food trucks. Woodside Hard Ciders in Aquebogue, Furnace Spicy Hard Cider in Sag Harbor and Riverhead Ciderhouse in Calverton are among the locally represented brands. Fan favorites like Angry Orchard, Rumor Mill Hard Cider and Woodside Orchards are also participating in the Festival, and for a more global experience, attendees can try a variety of imported ciders and perries from Spain, England and other countries.

Additionally, the afternoon will include music from a DJ, presented by Strongbow (England), who will please the crowd with top hits, and Woodchuck in Vermont will be commemorating its 25th anniversary at the event by presenting a few extraordinary new varieties.
For those who like to pair their cider with something sweet, think about entering the Festival’s inaugural apple cider donut eating contest. “We’re super excited to bring this new contest element to the cider festival,” said Dolan. “The apple cider donut eating contest is fun to do and fun to watch…and another way to showcase the star of the show, the beloved apple.”
