Vered Art Gallery in East Hampton will debut its Celebration of Larry Rivers exhibition, which highlights two suites of work, Me and My Shadow and Oedipus Rex, on Saturday, July 30th from 8 to 11 p.m. The opening celebration will include refreshments, great art work, and enjoyable company.

Me and My Shadow will feature four larger than life size mirror images. Each will have a sumptuous female figure and her shadow, all of which were created in 1970.
“Me and My Shadow epitomizes the moment when the world of ‘art’ looked at photography and said ‘YES, PHOTOGRAPHY IS ART!'” shared Janet Lehr, Principal of Vered Art Gallery.
Oedipus Rex is comprised of 29 pieces of work created for the 1966 Igor Stravinsky Opera-Oratorio festival at Lincoln Center. It revolves around the work by Sophocles describing the plague in Thebes c. 400 BCE during the reign of Oedipus the King. The series features oil and spray painted works on linen applied to wood free-formed shaped wood panels. The work is also accompanied by seven preliminary drawings and one stencil offered individually.
“Oedipus Rex displays the way the local artistic community appreciated Larry,” said Lehr. “The conductor who called upon Larry to do the sets, Lucas Karytinos, they were neighbors in the Hamptons, and it was natural for Lucas to turn to Larry for the sets for the performance.”
