Me and My Shadow will feature four larger than life size mirror images. Each will have a sumptuous female figure and her shadow, all of which were created in 1970.
“Me and My Shadow epitomizes the moment when the world of ‘art’ looked at photography and said ‘YES, PHOTOGRAPHY IS ART!'” shared Janet Lehr, Principal of Vered Art Gallery.
Oedipus Rex is comprised of 29 pieces of work created for the 1966 Igor Stravinsky Opera-Oratorio festival at Lincoln Center. It revolves around the work by Sophocles describing the plague in Thebes c. 400 BCE during the reign of Oedipus the King. The series features oil and spray painted works on linen applied to wood free-formed shaped wood panels. The work is also accompanied by seven preliminary drawings and one stencil offered individually.
“Oedipus Rex displays the way the local artistic community appreciated Larry,” said Lehr. “The conductor who called upon Larry to do the sets, Lucas Karytinos, they were neighbors in the Hamptons, and it was natural for Lucas to turn to Larry for the sets for the performance.”
You can join Vered Gallery on Sunday, August 7th at 11 a.m. for a brunch conversation on Larry Rivers and the exhibition between David Cohen, editor and publisher of artcritical, and Catherine Gropper, former student of Larry Rivers, artist, and playwright. Seating is limited and RSVP is mandatory. To RSVP, email [email protected].
Celebration of Larry Rivers will be on view through Labor Day weekend.
