Second House In Montauk: Worth Third, Fourth And More Efforts To Save

Eileen Caseyby Eileen Casey
in Community
Home Community

Built in 1746, Second House, formerly known as “Fort Pond House” is the oldest structure in Montauk. Originally built to house the keepers who tended the cattle and sheep grazing along the hills and pasturelands of Montauk, a First and Third House were also built. The keepers who occupied each of these homes had very specific roles in maintaining the sheep and cattle, and the responsibility of the Second House keeper was to be sure sheep did not stray into the cattle lands, as well as maintain the fence from the ocean to the south end of Fort Pond, and the north end of Fort Pond to Fort Pond Bay – a management system that would last until 1879.

Following the sale of Montauk that year to Arthur Benson, the keepers were allowed to continue to manage the livestock and farm the property as they had been doing for almost 200 years. In addition, their wives ran the Second House as an Inn.

In June of 1968, the Town of East Hampton acquired the house for $75,000 from its owners, the David E. Kennedy family, to be operated by the Montauk Historical Society which opened Second House as a museum on June 28, 1969. Sadly, the museum was forced to close to the public in 2014, as the interior became inhospitable for visitors. The Save Second House Committee was formed in 2013 to raise funds to initiate much needed repairs.

In March of 2016, Robert Hefner, at the request of the Town of East Hampton, completed the first Historical Structure Report on Second House. Guided by the recommendations of this report, the Montauk Historical Society and the Town of East Hampton hope to restore the building, the barn, and the grounds, as well as the visual connection to Fort Pond. The Montauk Historical Society hopes to be able to convey its historical significance; to recall the lives of the keepers and their role in managing the Montauk pasture, which was the primary resource of East Hampton’s agricultural economy for well over 200 years.

Perhaps best known for the summer crafts fairs which began in 1970, Montauk Historical Society will present the 45th Annual Craft Show at Second House on Saturday, July 16th and Sunday, July 17th, Saturday, August 13th and Sunday, August 14th, and Saturday, September 24th and Sunday, September 25th. They will host additional events throughout the year such as the Doggie Social/Community Yard Sale; a book sale to be held on Sunday, May 22nd, as well as two outdoor movie nights on the lawn scheduled for Friday, July 8th, and Friday, August 5th. According to Kathryn Nadeau, current President of the Montauk Historical Society, they are currently seeking sponsors for these events and urge anyone interested to visit www.montaukhistoricalsociety.org for updates.

This architectural treasure is eloquently explained in the Robert Hefners Historical Structure Report, dated March 2016. “The original house had a form and floor plan typical of a medium sized East Hampton farmhouse. In 1797, a knee wall was created at the second floor which gave the house an appearance associated with the first half of the 19th century. Further alterations were made in 1880 by Arthur Benson to expand and upgrade accommodations for his family and friends as well as for the designers and builders of the Montauk Association Homes. In 1912, there were additional alterations and additions by David E. Kennedy, which gave the Second House the appearance of a summer cottage of the early 20th century which is what the majority of people recognize as the Second House of today.”

It is hopeful that both residents and visitors to Montauk will engage in the many fund raising activities so that this important home of great historical significance can be enjoyed and treasured by all who visit the “end of the line.”

  • On Tuesday, July 22nd, Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings hosted a charity Hampton Volley Tournament at Kirk Park Beach in Montauk. The tournament featured eight dynamic teams, uniting elite professional athletes, local lifeguards, and community members. Net proceeds from the tournament will go to the Hampton Lifeguard Association and P1440 Foundation, aiming to unite, empower, and inspire through the transformative sport of beach volleyball.

Simultaneously, a VIP gifting suite and lounge at Hero Beach Club in Montauk kept the momentum going with music by Rachel Winters and Ana Boo. To mark the special occasion, guests were treated to Hammitt bags with Montauk Tattoo personalized leather bag tags. • Montauk has a new hospitality gem: Mary Lou’s Montauk. The high-energy, design-forward concept that blends coastal dining with a sense of playful excess. Mary Lou’s offers nightly dinner service, a full cocktail lounge and weekend music programming that blends nostalgic vibes with fresh energy.

After launching in Palm Beach, the team behind Mary Lou’s, Alex Melillo, Joe Cervasio, and Topher Grubb, are bringing the vibe north, teaming up with NDT Development to open a new outpost at 474 West Lake Drive.

Alex Melillo, co-founder of Mary Lou’s, shared about the origins of the concept, why Montauk was the next natural step and what guests can expect from this summer’s new venue.

Can you walk us through the journey of how the idea for Mary Lou’s came to life?

The idea for Mary Lou’s was born out of a genuine love for creating lasting memories and shared experiences. We’ve always admired the golden era of New York’s nightlife – when people went out to truly let go, to dance without restraint, and to enjoy the moment without ego. There was a certain magic back then, a raw energy that felt authentic and uninhibited.

  • “Tonight is our most successful benefit ever!” said Louis Bradbury, LongHouse Reserve Board President, “We’re grateful for our co-chairs Gael Towey and Raisa Lopez-Rhoden, for their incredible leadership in bringing tonight to life.” For this special evening, themed, “LUMINOSITY’, the 16-acre sculpture garden and nature sanctuary lit up with vibrant colors, live music, community love, and lots of laughter. “With 100% board participation, our benefit sold out before invitations were ever sent!“, continued Bradbury, “How many of you have come to LongHouse more than once in a year? Have you seen the four seasons here? Daffodils, cherry blossoms, and azaleas in Spring; lush green of Summer; brilliant Autumn leaves, and spectacular snowdrops and witch hazel in Winter. Tonight, we come together in gratitude for all of it.”

  • Can’t Forget Your QUAYS @quayaustralia @montaukyachtclub

(It’s pronounced “key”—and just as essential.)

As summer hits its stride, QUAY Eyewear brought the heat to Montauk Yacht Club with a picture-perfect Hamptons weekend – step-and-repeat hosted by the @tiffbaira, DJ, Caviar + Oyster Bars, cocktails, and of course exclusive giveaways from the Montauk Edit. The event celebrated QUAY’s summer-long collaboration at Montauk Yacht Club and cemented the brand’s place as a rising staple on the East End.

Simply, QUAY makes trend-forward designer eyewear for any moment or mood, and at a price that encourages adventures.

If the Hamptons are the capital of Laidback Luxury, QUAY shades pair perfectly with the aesthetic and vibe. The price range starts at surprisingly affordable ($39!) and ranges entirely reasonable ($105) – we’re here for it, QUAY!

The Montauk Edit is fantastic. I love my “Fast Lane” and am 100% considering grabbing a pair of the “ANYWAYS.” The styles are Gen-Z and Millennial-approved—no small feat.

In the Hamptons, great sunglasses are as important as your keys. Leave your gas station glasses at home, but remember, you’re in the Hamptons to have fun, so maybe don’t bring sunglasses that need an insurance policy.
