“The Life of a Puppet,” presented by the Young Artists Residency Project of The Watermill Center, is set to debut at the Sara Nightingale Gallery on Tuesday, February 3rd. From 5 to 7 p.m., East End residents are invited to view the new installation project during the opening reception.
The Watermill Center’s Young Artist Residency Project [YARP] is an after-school arts program, in partnership with the Bridgehampton Child Care & Recreation Center. Last fall, students began collaborating with the Center’s Resident Artists as they explored the grounds of the Hamptons Center and experimented with performance. The young artists found inspiration from sculptural portraits as well as textiles in the collection and then created large-scale puppets that will be used in their Spring 2015 collaborative performance.

The multi-media show at the Sara Nightingale Gallery features portraiture and colorful characters with interactive and participatory elements. The exhibit will feature works by YARP students as well as Jose Carlos Casado, a Watermill Resident Artist in 2014, and Springs-based Christa Maiwald. Casado will showcase a projected video alongside a series of paintings that will be accessible via an app on the viewer’s smartphone or tablet. Maiwald will feature a selection of comedic and ornately embroidered portraits, photography and an “edible sculpture” for the opening night reception.
