Everyone yells cheese, and then you’re blinded by the big, bright flash. Whether it be an unfortunately dated style, uncooperative family member, a terrible setup, or just bad timing, the holiday season is prime time for capturing an awkward family photo. Chances are you’ve been part of at least one regrettable portrait and hopefully you can look back and laugh. If not, then take comfort in knowing it’s not just your family. Southampton Arts Center is showcasing these hilarious moments during their new exhibit, “Awkward Family Photos: The Exhibition,” which is debuting just in time for the holidays.

“We are delighted to have such a fun, family-oriented exhibit this holiday season,” said Southampton Arts Center Director Michele Thompson. “This speaks to our mission of providing programming for the entire community.”
“Awkward Family Photos: The Exhibition” is a collection of endearing, perfectly imperfect portraits from the viral internet sensation, awkwardfamilyphotos.com. Mike Bender and Doug Chernack, founders of the website, created and designed the exhibit, which aims to explore the charmingly flawed moments that tie hand in hand with the holidays and embrace the awkwardness.
For families and patrons that already accept those mortifying moments with laughter, the exhibition will feature a “Selfie Spot,” an area packed with props and costumes for families to recreate an awkward family photo. Those gutsy enough can even post them to the walls of Southampton Arts Center or share them on social media.
So as you sit around the Christmas dinner table with your loved ones, take comfort in knowing it’s not just your family.
