Hamptons Animal Shelters Uniting For World Spay Day

The growing feral cat population on Long Island is causing overcrowding at East End shelters, leaving many cats and kittens without a home. Three local animal shelters are uniting in honor of World Spay Day, for two mass trapping of feral cats on both the North and South Fork of Long Island. Southampton Animal Shelter (102 Old Riverhead Road, Hampton Bays, 631-728-7387, www.southamptonanimalshelter.com), Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons (ARF, 90 Daniels Hole Road, Wainscott, 631-537-0400, www.arfhamptons.org) and North Fork Animal Welfare League (165 Peconic Lane, Peconic, 631-765-1811, nfawl.org) hope to help resolve some of the problem areas during the community events.

According to the Southampton Animal Shelter, “The importance of spaying and neutering your pets is not only healthier for them, it’s healthier for your community.”

ARF is holding the first mass trapping on Monday, February 17, as part of Spay/Neuter awareness month. They are in need of volunteers to assist with the trap and transport cats to ARF in Wainscott or to the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation’s Mobile Clinic located at the East Quogue Methodist Church. North Fork Animal Welfare League (southold.nfawl.org) is holding the second on Sunday, March 2 at their Southold Shelter.

The Southampton Animal Shelter’s new Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinic, which was awarded through a grant from the ASPCA, will be at both to perform the TNR (trap/neuter/release) program.
