Stony Brook Southampton Hospital Reports It’s COVID-19 Free

Stony Brook Southampton Hospital is closing out July by announcing some very, very exciting news: Stony Brook Southampton Hospital has reported no confirmed COVID-19 admissions and no admitted patients under suspicion for COVID-19. This marks the first time since March 8, 2020 that the Hospital was not treating a patient for COVID-19 symptoms.

“As of this morning, Friday, July 31, we have no confirmed COVID admitted patients in our Hospital and no admitted patients under investigation for COVID-19,” reported Robert S. Chaloner, Chief Administrative Officer, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. “This is a significant milestone in our fight against the coronavirus and is a result of the excellent care provided by our medical staff and healthcare workers.”

Stony Brook Southampton Hospital also commemorated the discharge of a recovered COVID-19 patient, who spent 120 days hospitalized – approximately four weeks of which were spent on a ventilator.

“We continue to test all admitted patients for COVID-19,” Chaloner added. “We request that all our East End communities continue to follow CDC guidelines, including wearing facemasks, social distancing, and frequent handwashing.”

Suffolk County’s COVID-19 case update on July 30 reported that a total of 468,375 COVID-19 tests have been administered, an addition of 6,247 tests. There have been 43,170 total cases and 86 new cases. Of the 3,025 Suffolk County hospital beds, 793 are available (26 percent) and of the 396 ICU beds, 139 are available (35 percent).

While this is certainly something to celebrate, the Hospital is readying for the potential of a second surge of COVID admissions in the fall.
