Once protestors reached Jobs Lane, they were told by march leader Trevon Jenkins, 19, to lay on the ground for eight minutes and 46 seconds to commemorate how long George Floyd was pinned on the ground by the police.
"It is difficult to express how disappointing this is for everyone," said Shanette Cohen, Executive Director of the Hampton Classic. "However, given the current situation and the uncertainty that lies ahead, our Board reached the conclusion that there really is no other option."
"Ultimately the health and safety of our residents, workers and visitors is our most important priority, so I'm beyond excited to finally have a Montauk testing site that is easily accessible to our local population," Paul Monte relayed.
"I attended a peaceful protest in Brentwood and I immediately got inspired to bring something like this out to the East End! I got tired of asking myself, expressing to others, and hearing from others that we should do this and decided to act on it!" Taliya Hayes, who is organizing the event with Anna Hoffmann, noted.
"We are moved to action after the vicious and callous murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police. We stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters all over the country who demand an end to racist policing," event organizers relayed.
"They are all Sag Harbor heroes and deserve a huge debt of gratitude from our community," Bob Weinstein said about those featured in the campaign.
Even in the darkest hours of the failed loves of my past I have always believed in the power of love, it's glow on life, it's ability to make best things happen. How can anyone disagree?
"The ultimate goal is to have hundreds of organizations highlighted and for Hamptons United to really be part of the local community for the longer term and not just through COVID-19," Kotler told Hamptons.com.
