Southampton annually boasts the largest Fourth of July parade on Long Island, and despite the monsoon, this past fourth was no different. Fire and police departments, bagpipers, marching bands, and Hamptons characters all proudly marched through torrential downpours to celebrate America’s freedom.

“The parade was a success enjoyed by all. The rain held out, it was very entertaining and a wonderful way to enjoy Independence Day,” exclaimed parade attendee Barton Stacy.
While the crowds lined along Southampton Village were far less than in years past, the enthusiasm remained the same. Families clad in ponchos and umbrellas cheered from under awnings and big trees along Main Street. Stores served as a brief retreat from the weather for parade watchers. Still true of the Southampton parade, canines and children (ranging from 10 to 80 pounds) alike leaped into the safety of their parents’ arms as the colonial brigade fired cannons and guns on the parade route.
“Obviously I wish it wasn’t raining on what is traditionally one of the best weekends in the Hamptons, but I think this sort of turnout with this kind of weather is truly indicative of the community out here and how much the parade brings everyone together,” commented Diana Gunwall.
