The month of May brings several lectures and tours to Southampton Historical Museum, in continuation of Southampton’s 375th Anniversary celebrations.
The events begin with Southampton’s Houses of Worship Tour on Sunday, May 3rd from 1 to 4 p.m. Attendees will take a tour of First Presbyterian Church, St. John’s Episcopal Church, Dune Church St Andrews, Sacred Hearts of Jesus & Mary Basilica, Chabad of Southampton, Community Baptist, Greek Orthodox Church of the Hamptons, Shinnecock Presbyterian Church, Our Lady of Poland, Kings Chapel, First Baptist Church and Christian Science Church. Admission is free.
Next up is “The Shinnecock Indians: America’s First Whalers” on Thursday, May 14th at 12 p.m. During the discussion, Dr. John Strong will speak about the earliest East End whalers, the Shinnecock. Way before whaling became a prosperous industry in America, the Shinnecock had created an intricate method for hunting the colossal aquatic creatures. The process involved teams of men in canoes who journeyed out into the coastal waters. Admission to the lecture is free.

Join preservationist, blogger and author of “The Southampton Cottages of Gin Lane,” Sally Spanburgh on Thursday, May 28th at 12 p.m., for “Southampton’s Early Summer Community & the Houses They Lived In.” The lecture will take a look at intriguing stories Spanburgh discovered during research for her soon-to-be published book on the cottages in located along Lake Agawam.
May will conclude with a Museum favorite, the 6th Annual Southampton House Tour “Insider’s View.” On Saturday, May 30th, from 1 to 4 p.m., get a sneak peak into the extraordinary houses that showcase Southampton’s exceptional architectural history, taking a look at houses from Colonial days, right up to the present. A champagne toast, hosted by Sant Ambroeus Restaurant, will follow from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Admission is $95 in advance or $110 on the day of tour.
