Batten Down The Hatches: Southampton Town Prepares For The Arrival Of Hurricane Joaquin

While the current course of Hurricane Joaquin is still uncertain, Southampton Town services, including the Highway Department, the Police Department, local Fire Departments and the Emergency Operations Center (EOC), are preparing for any impact that the storm may have on the East End.

“The Town is taking all necessary precautions,” noted Anna Supervisor Throne-Holst. “We can expect impacts from significant rain on Friday and Saturday followed by the impact of Hurricane Joaquin on Sunday and Monday. These two events will impact residents in all parts of Town. Please prepare!”

As of right now, heavy rains, high winds and local flooding are expected Wednesday through Monday, and as the storm approaches the Hamptons, Town services will work diligently with the Suffolk County Fire, Rescue & Emergency Services to monitor the storm’s progress and coordinate emergency services.

“While too early to predict the storm’s path, the Town is preparing for all potential scenarios and suggests residents do the same and keep informed by checking the Towns website for updated information,” said Councilwoman Christine Scalera.

Southampton Town will provide special instructions in the case of a state of emergency, and if evacuations are required in some areas, the Town will coordinate with local Fire Departments to directly inform the impacted residents.

Residents are encouraged to properly prepare for the storm by keeping important telephone numbers with them, have a plan for those caring for the elderly and those with special needs, ensure your pet’s safety, protect your home or business, and assemble a “Go Bag” and home emergency kit.
