October is all about Breast Cancer Awareness, so mark your calendars for the 17th Annual Shelter Island Fall 5k Run/Walk on Saturday, October 15th at 11 a.m. Participants will gather to run or stroll at Crescent Beach in Shelter Island Heights in support of those who have battled breast cancer. This event is a USA track and field certified course and will support the North Fork Breast Health Coalition, the Coalition for Women’s Breast Health at Southampton Hospital and Lucia’s Angels. All proceeds will directly benefit patient care through these local breast health organizations.
“You are stronger than you know… Braver than you think, and more loved than you can imagine. You matter. We care. You are not alone,” remarked M.E. Adipietro, one of the founders of the Shelter Island 5k Run/Walk.

Though the race will certainly be fun, there is also a bit of competition. Medals are awarded for the top male and female finisher, and for the first place breast cancer survivor runner and walker respectively. Prizes will also be awarded to the team with the most participants and for the top two pledge winners. The run/walk will offer a free shuttle bus that operates from the North Ferry to registration between 9 a.m. and 10:15 a.m. The return shuttle bus will operate until 1 p.m.
An open stretch clinic will start at 10 a.m. This 5k is family friendly and all ages are welcome. Dogs as well as strollers are also allowed. All participants of the event are invited to a free post-race barbecue that is sponsored by the IGA and Tom Hashagen.

There will also be a raffle with over 20 prizes and all proceeds from this raffle will benefit Lucia’s Angels.
Registration is $30 for adults, $10 for kids (14 and under), and will be open prior to midnight of October 14th. Same day registration fees are $40 for adults and $20 for kids. The first 500 participants are guaranteed race shirts and goody bags!
