South Fork Natural History Museum Establishes After School Nature Enrichment Bilingual Program

What a beautiful place we live in! We are fortunate enough to count beaches and pine barrens among the many natural ecosystems Long Island has to offer, and the South Fork Natural History Museum (SoFo) plans to highlight these treasures during its new After School Nature Enrichment Bilingual Program, which aims to provide education on our area’s numerous beautiful ecosystems to Latino and Hispanic families in our community.

Two local bilingual high school students have taken the initiative to involve themselves in this unique after-school program. Alexandra Perez, an East Hampton High School Senior, and Janet Soledad, a Southampton High School Junior, tapped into their interest in natural sciences by volunteering to work with SoFo’s Nature Educators to guide families through the Museum. On these tours, visitors will stroll through the Museum’s interactive exhibits depicting the accurate natural habitat surrounding us. Perez, Soledad and other Nature Educators will provide information and guidance through the number of terrariums, aquariums and touch tanks every Tuesday and Thursday from 3 yo 5 p.m., and every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

OLA (Organización Latino-Americana) of Eastern Long Island, a Sagaponack-based nonprofit agency that is dedicated to nurturing social, economic, cultural, and educational development within Latino and Hispanic communities that reside within the East End, is thrilled that SoFo has established this new program. “OLA is so pleased that Latino families will be connected to the important work that SoFo is doing,” said Minerva Perez, OLA Executive Director.

The program has been made possible by the generosity of the All For the East End (AFTEE) Fund at the Long Island Community Foundation and an anonymous organization.

“We are extremely grateful to the Long Island Community Foundation and to our Anonymous Foundation for enabling SoFo to offer this very important program,” shared Frank Quevedo, SoFo’s Executive Director.

The bilingual program is free to all participating families.

The South Fork Natural History Museum is a nonprofit organization that has operated under the goal of providing nature environmental education of the South Fork since 1989. The Museum offers over 250 educational programs for the whole family, ever year.
