Dr. Paul M. Matthews To Lead “Keeping Your Brain Healthy And Your Memories Alive” At Southampton Hospital

Southampton Hospital is set to host a complimentary public brain health lecture on Saturday, July 8 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The presentation will feature Dr. Paul M. Matthews, a professor and the head of the Division of Brain Sciences at Imperial College London in the UK. Dr. Matthews will be introduced by Suzanne Nalbantian, an author and a professor of Comparative Literature at Long Island University and an interdisciplinary scholar.

“I look forward contributing to the public outreach activities of Southampton Hospital by describing recent research defining the ways in which lifestyle and the environment can affect brain health with aging,” said Dr. Matthews. “I am excited by the idea that acting on this knowledge could help people prevent the onset or slow the onset of brain diseases and help people live longer, fuller lives.”

During his lecture, Keeping Your Brain Healthy and Your Memories Alive, Dr. Matthews will discuss how language is an important aspect of memory because it is critical to consciousness and our sense of who we are. He will also describe the mechanisms of brain plasticity and how these methods support brain injuries as well as delay the onset of brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Dr. Matthews holds degrees from the University of Oxford and Stanford University, trained at Montreal Neurological Institute and holds the title of Visiting Professor at many prestigious universities, including the University of Oxford and McGill University. He is also the Associate Director of the UK Dementia Research Institute, Chair of the Dementias Platforms UK Imaging Network, and Chair of the UK Biobank Imaging Working Group. Dr. Matthews is an Honorary Consultant Neurologist within the Imperial College Healthcare Trust and at the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals and also a Fellow of St. Edmund Hall in Oxford.

Suzanne Nalbantian has a PhD from Columbia University and has authored many books, including Memory in Literature: From Rousseau to Neurosciences, Aesthetic Autobiography,, The Symbol of the Soul Form Holderlin to Yeats, and The Memory Process | The MIT Press, edited by Suzanne Nalbantian, Paul M. Matthews and James L. McClelland.

This is a free event and a reception with refreshments will follow. The lecture will take place at Southampton Hospital’s Parrish Memorial Hall.
