Annual Mythical Montauk Scavenger Hunt To Take Place This Weekend

The Neo-Political Cowgirls is hosting ZIMA!, the organization’s thrilling yearly expedition throughout “The End,” on Sunday, February 9.

“ZIMA! is The Neo-Political Cowgirls’ annual winter wildness theatrical scavenger hunt in downtown Montauk,” Kate Mueth, The Neo-Political Cowgirls Founder, shared. “A unique experience for all ages, journey in search of hidden characters in wild dress to discover the answers to the riddle.”

From 1 to 2:30 p.m., a quest will take participants on a magical journey to find secret characters and vignettes that will help solve a mythological quandary.

Inspired by the coldest months of the year (zima means winter in Polish), the seasonal interactive adventure will commence at the Montauk Village Green and then delve into the “depths of dreams, Jungian psychology and imagery.”

“ZIMA! began 12 years ago to engage our community in the beauty of the East End winter. A time when too many people hole-up, wish winter away, and become rather shut-in. Winter to us is a gorgeous time of exploration and magic in our natural outdoor surroundings,” Mueth explained. “To pop wild characters from myth onto the (sometimes, sometimes not white) landscape of winter is really incredible to see and it inspires, we hope, imaginative fun in nature while also digging deeply into the Jungian metaphor of the importance of ‘dark, cold days of sleep.’ It’s an imperative time for self-realization, winter.”

After the entertaining pursuit has culminated, participants will gather at The Montauk Playhouse (240 Edgemere Street, Montauk) at 2 p.m. for hot cocoa and cookies, and the answer to the riddle, of course.

“We’re excited to partner with the Neo-Political Cowgirls again on this fun cultural event and we look forward to welcoming everyone to the Playhouse afterwards for refreshments and to see if they’ve solved the puzzle!” said Julia McCormack, the Montauk Playhouse Foundation’s Director of Development.

Tickets are $10 for students and $15 for adults in advance, and $15 students and $20 adults at the door. The event is presented with support from The Montauk Playhouse Community Center Foundation and Montauk Chamber of Commerce.

“Incorporating theater, movement, music and masks, ZIMA! is full of surprises and thought-provoking visuals,” Mueth added.
