Giovanna Fiorello, Owner & Principal Designer at Fiorello Designs, Discusses Successful Design in the Hamptons

Fiorello Designs owner and principal designer, Giovanna Fiorello

Fiorello Designs is an interior design studio focusing on projects from the East End of Long Island to New York and Florida. Founded by owner and principal designer, Giovanna Fiorello, her focus has been on the advancement and contribution of women in the industry since the inception of Fiorello Designs.

With projects ranging in styles and personalities, Giovanna continues to grow her design business on the East End. She spoke about what sets Fiorello Design apart, her client-centric approach, and shared her top 5 interior design tips that can be applied by anyone looking to transform their space.

Can you discuss your background and how you got started with interior design?

GF: Growing up, I always had a passion for aesthetics and an interest in how spaces impact people’s experiences. I was around construction when I was younger, and the process always fascinated me. But then, my senior year of high school, I took an architecture elective course and knew immediately the field was for me. I went to NYIT for Interior Design and excelled immensely in the program.

What is the Fiorello Designs brand all about?

GF: Fiorello Designs is built on the advancement of women in the construction industry. Our goal is to bridge the gap between construction and design to create harmonious spaces.

Can you talk about your style and approach when it comes to interior design and what sets it apart from other designers?

GF: I have developed a very client centric based approach. I am all about personality and comfort. My goal is to make the design process as least intimidating as possible. It’s important on the front end of the project to really understand your client and their needs. If you can establish a strong foundation from the beginning it will only help keep for a smooth process and outcome. My style focuses on the integration of color and warmth into spaces. I like to keep spaces playful and welcoming to spark liveliness and good conversation. My goal in every space I create is to instill a sense of creativity and thought for everyone that enters the space. I want others to exude with creativity and interest when they leave my space.

How do each of your projects differ from one another?

GF: Every project differs in personality and story. Alongside sparking creativity, I love to add flavor and personality to a space. Depending on the space, it could be sassy, happy, moody, etc. Although my projects have different ā€œpersonalitiesā€ they all speak the same language.

What are your favorite design elements?

GF: My favorite design elements are stone and lighting. I am obsessed with going to the stone yard and picking out slabs that turn into masterpieces. You can do so many things with stone, things that people have never experienced before. Stone can add warmth, depth, and texture. Secondly, I love a good light fixture. Light fixtures really connect what’s happening on the floor to the ceiling. It creates a conversation from top to bottom.

What’s the most important thing you keep in mind when designing a space?

GF: When designing a space, I make sure to always consider scale and functionality. It is important to select pieces that don’t overpower a room and are functional to the user. Although a piece may look nice, it is important to investigate, generate drawings, and double check measurements to ensure proper flow and scale to a space.

Do the Hamptons inspire your designs?

GF: Yes, very much so. There is something so unique about the Hamptons. Being a part of this community has taught me so much about design and planning. Specifically, there is something so warm about being local to beaches, small towns, and historic neighborhoods. I love to add nodes of beach textures and colors into my spaces and eclectic pieces that tie in new age and old age.

When and why did you decide to start your interior design business? Was it always your goal?

GF: I always knew I would own a business, but I didn’t know to what capacity. I started my business to make a statement and bridge the gap between knowledge and ageism. As a young designer, I knew I would face difficulties with my age, but the challenge is invigorating. I am so thankful for my journey and all of the people that have supported me along the way. Not only am I young and hungry but I knew that my designs could blossom at a faster rate if I took the risk to take them to next level.

What’s your favorite pastime in the Hamptons?

GF: Being on the job sites is fun and all but I definitely do enjoy myself in the Hamptons socially as well. I play volleyball in the summers at Tiana Beach in Hampton Bays and in the winter at SYS in Southampton. I also love to spend my time at Calissa in Watermill, Bobby Vans in Bridgehampton, and Cowfish in Hampton Bays. And lastly, I always make it a point to do a few weekends in Montauk and attend events at Surf Lodge.

What led you to the East End?

GF: I grew up in Bellport on Long Island and actually never stepped foot into the Hamptons until I graduated from college and started my first full time job at a building company in Bridgehampton. Since then, I have been completely in love with the Hamptons.

What has been the biggest factor in your success?

GF: The biggest factor in my success has been my drive and personality. I feel that because I am so driven, I have been able to keep moving and growing. Personality has been the forefront of my career and has been extremely impactful to my career. I am attentive and personable with everyone I meet and am grateful for everyone in my corner.

Can you share your top 5 interior design tips with our readers?

GF: My top 5 interior design tips are:

– Focus on lighting: Lighting can dramatically influence mood and functionality of a space.

– Play with color and texture: Mix colors and different textures to add depth and personality to your space.

– Utilize opportunities for accent ceilings: Adding an accent ceiling and exploring material is a great way to create a unique focal point.

– Tasteful prints: A good print is a great way to style your space. Whether it is a printed pillow, drapery piece, or chair, it is a great way to add your project.

– Color drenching: Color drenching is a design element in which you use a color in various different shades to create depth of the color itself. It is cool to do this in spaces where color is the focal point.

  • This winter, while most of us on the East End were hunkered down during historic snowfall, Rod Cummings was doing what he does best: selling luxury real estate. Not even a cumulative 50ā€ of snowfall could derail the deal at 13 Beach Lane in Quogue Village, now in contract and last listed at $6,500,000.

Successful sales in the Hamptons are always notable, but a sale (and bidding war) that materializes fast, in less than a month on the market, in February, under the weight of historic snowfall across the East End – that’s newsworthy.
