“In the Whale” is the Must-See Documentary Making its Long Island Premiere at the WHBPAC

Dubbed as the “greatest fish story ever told,” the acclaimed documentary, “In the Whale,” chronicles the remarkable journey of Cape Cod fisherman Michael Packard. Making its Long Island debut on March 2nd at 7pm at the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center, this compelling film offers viewers an unforgettable glimpse into the unpredictable wonders of life.

Executive Director of WHBPAC, Julienne Penza-Boone, aptly describes Michael Packard’s incredible survival as a testament to life’s miraculous nature. “In the Whale” unfolds as a voyage into the extraordinary, showcasing Packard’s harrowing encounter with a humpback whale and his subsequent escape. The screening will be complemented by a thought-provoking discussion and audience Q&A session with Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and director, New York native David Abel.

At its core, “In the Whale” is a captivating exploration of resilience and human spirit. Set against the backdrop of Cape Cod’s shark-infested waters, the film follows Packard’s routine dives alongside his longtime mate, Josiah Mayo. Despite facing numerous perils, including encounters with great whites and a plane crash in the jungles of Costa Rica, Packard’s ordeal with the humpback whale defies belief.

Engulfed by the massive mammal’s mouth during a routine dive, Packard found himself in a surreal, pitch-black captivity. After what felt like an eternity, he miraculously emerged from the whale’s grasp, an experience that garnered worldwide attention and sparked both awe and skepticism. Yet, beyond the glare of the spotlight, Packard’s resilience and determination shine through, underscoring the indomitable spirit of mankind.

As the film unfolds, viewers are treated to a riveting narrative that transcends the boundaries of disbelief. Heather Draskin, Marketing Director of WHBPAC, aptly describes “In the Whale” as a life-affirming testament to the human spirit. Beyond the sensational headlines lies a poignant story of survival, courage, and the enduring power of hope.

Following the screening, audiences will have the opportunity to engage in a compelling Q&A session with David Abel, offering deeper insights into the making of this extraordinary documentary. Don’t miss the chance to be part of this unforgettable evening, as “In the Whale” takes audiences on a journey of awe-inspiring resilience and the triumph of the human spirit.

  • There are restaurants that simply serve a meal, and then there are restaurants that create an unbelievable memory and experience. Lulu Kitchen & Bar in Sag Harbor is the latter. I recently stopped in for lunch with my co-worker, Val, and from the moment we walked through the door, it was clear why this has become one of the Hamptons’ most celebrated dining destinations.

One of Lulu’s defining features is its commitment to wood-fired cooking. Nearly everything is prepared over a live fire using actual wooden logs, giving the food a distinctive depth of flavor that is difficult to replicate. You can actually see the flames working behind the scenes, adding to the experience.

Lulu also features a fantastic bar with an impressive selection of local craft beers alongside outstanding international offerings, making it just as appealing for an afternoon drink as it is for a full meal.
