Comedian Jordan Rock is appearing at the Sticks and Stones Comedy Club in Southampton on July 1st. From a family of comedians, he is the brother of Chris Rock, Tony Rock and Andre Rock. He has been seen on Netflix and Last Comic Standing, and he is one of the leading positive and funny voices of standup comedy in the country. About appearing at Sticks and Stones, Jordan Rock told hamptons.com, “I am looking forward to being out there. I am the funniest I have ever been. I just finished recording an album and I’m ready to go. I am looking for a great place to really connect and do some really great things.”
In the interview Jordan shared that he believes “Comedy is important because people need breaks from reality…so they can just relax.” He realized he was funny when “I was in 7th grade, and that went well, I could always get laughs but I didn’t take it seriously until I was eighteen.”
Everyone has had people in their businesses they look up to. People who have been influential to their lives and career. As for who has been influential and helpful in Jordan Rock’s career, he first talked about his family, his brothers Chris, Andre and Tony, but then he added this. “I’d have to say my friend Pete (Davidson), he has been a very important person in my career because sometimes when I don’t know what to do, or wonder what’s next, I call him.”
He said the perfect audience for his comedy is a diverse one. Saying “I need people of all races and colors there in the audience to get balance; I need balance. I need everyone there; If one person is missing then you don’t get to have fun.” Then he added, laughing, “Everyone has to be there to defend themselves.”
Watching comedy evolve and going through interesting times due to the pandemic and changing social norms Jordan Rock showed his wisdom saying this, “Comedy is going to keep on going, people are going to laugh…where is it going? I really have no idea, I am just on the ride, so I guess I just have to see where it goes.” He said part of the change is people are often watching comedy clips on their phones.
When asked of his philosophy on the basic makeup of comedy, whether it is all instinct or is it all preparation, Jordon said this, “I kind of feel those things blend together after a while. I believe they are both working at the same time. You have to prepare and work on it for a while, then your preparation becomes your instincts after a while.”
When asked motivates a Jordon Rock, he said, “I love seeing people laugh.” He explained he likes giving people, “a different perspective on things, a comical one, a way they weren’t before looking at something.”
Comics who he enjoys? “Of course, my brothers; Ricky Velez is someone I enjoy every time I see him. I like to see Drew Michaels, Chad Daniels, John Small, mostly my peers. I know I like seeing my friends, but I also like seeing new people, too.
Comedy seems to be on an upswing in the country. It is the one medium that brings joy to a whole room of strangers. What is more beautiful than a roomful of strangers laughing, smiling, enjoying themselves and escaping from the stress and responsibilities of day to day living? Jordon Rock said he loves seeing people laugh. He said he believes he is at his funniest right now.
