On Sunday, August 7, owner & restaurateur Valerie Mnuchin welcomed a lively crowd of Shelter Island neighbors, local business owners, tastemakers, friends and family to preview Léon 1909, her transportive, new restaurant opening to the public this week on Thursday, August 11.
Valerie Mnuchin and her father Robert Mnuchin debut Léon 1909, their first independent restaurant located on Shelter Island. Named after Valerie’s paternal grandfather, whose affinity for romantic European adventures and seaside destinations inform the restaurant’s setting, Léon is an inviting homage to the past with warm, natural materials and nods to unfussy, countryside French and Italian fare. A wood-burning hearth at the heart of the restaurant serves as its anchor, inspiring a Provençal style menu showcasing regional ingredients.

Revelers were welcomed with cocktails and champagne upon arrival while chef Mason Lindahl prepared passed bites from the restaurant’s wood-burning hearth including skewered shrimp, crab gougeres and ribeye dressed in a Moroccan spiced chermoula.
Throughout the evening, guests enjoyed refreshing libations from Léon’s whimsical cocktail menu such as the Metropolitan with rosé, strawberry, almond and vodka and the L’Espirit D’Escalier with gin, absinthe, fennel and aromatized wine.
