When my husband first suggested we look for a beach house in Montauk my initial reaction was simple, no. I thought it was too far and too isolated from the rest of the Hamptons… fast forward six months and I’ve quickly discovered that those two things are what I love most about this surf town, which we now call home.

Since this is our first summer, we’re still in discovery mode, but I’ve learned that being at the literal end of Long Island has some major natural perks – gorgeous dunes, waves, high bluffs and an incredible coastline. Luckily for this city girl, there’s plenty of man-made fun to partake in as well!

Retail Therapy: Gansett Lane

You can’t leave Montauk without a trip to Gansett Lane. They have a beautifully curated selection of home goods and décor and you’ll want to move in the minute you set foot in the store. It’s the perfect place to pick up a gift (for your weekend hosts or for you) that will add a touch of that Montauk boho-beach vibe to your apartment!

Foodie Find: Gosman’s Fish Market

Don’t let the name fool you – this isn’t just a fish market. They have everything you need for a delicious dinner at home. Freshly baked bread, organic vegetables, amazing steaks and of course the freshest seafood in town. But you can’t leave without one of their signature pies (hello, Rhu-berry) … and if they’re out ask anyone that works there to check in the back! They usually have some extras hiding!

Breakfast of Champions: Goldberg’s Bagels

The line alone will make you turn around but if you know how to order you’ll be out of there in no time. The key to ordering is to order everything separately and grab it to go. DIY your bagel (or flagel, my personal favorite) at home and spend those 30 extra minutes you saved at the beach!

Namesake Cocktail: Ruschmeyer at Ruschmeyer’s

I take my cocktails very seriously, but not too seriously. My general rule of thumb is that if I can’t pronounce it I probably don’t want it in my drink. Luckily, the bar at Rushmeyer’s feels the same way. Their signature cocktail, The Ruschmeyer is made with vodka, watermelon juice and jalapeno – that’s it. Simple and fresh, just like summer should be!

Dinner al Fresco: Crow’s Nest

For such a small town, Montauk is blessed with plenty of great places to eat, but every weekend I find myself going back to The Crow’s Nest. Whether I eat solo at the bar (they serve the full menu) or with a big group of friends under the stars, it’s always a meal to remember!

Get On Your Feet: Shadmoor State Park

Whether you’re a fitness fanatic or just looking to incorporate a little exercise on your getaway, skip the crowds at Soul Cycle and go for a hike at Shadmoor State Park instead. The trails are easy enough for a beginner and have a major payoff when you hit the beautiful bluffs along the beachfront trail! Trust me, this hike is seriously Instagram worthy!

Locals Only: Liar’s Saloon

Montauk is home to some of the best bars and nightlife on the East End, but if you’re looking for a more low-key watering hole that feels like your neighborhood bar, dive into the ultimate Montauk dive bar, Liar’s Saloon. This is strictly a “no-heels” zone! And for those of you that want to show off your singing chops, Friday night karaoke is a must!

Next time you need a well-deserved break from the city or a respite from the hustle and bustle Hamptons’ summers, leave the crowds at The Lobster Roll in your rearview mirror and keep driving! And with this list you’ll be on well on your way to seeing LA FIN like a local!
