New Hamptons Trend: Private Swimming Beaches

Freaking out because of crowded Hampton beaches? The latest trend to beat the heat is renting or chartering a small sailboat or motorboat to scoot over to spots for private swimming. Think of it, anchored in but two or three feet of the cleanest water off a secluded beach in Gardiner’s Bay, or Peconic Bay, or North Sea, or Block Island Sound. The point is “no crowds.” No town rules, no “dress code.”

I have been doing this for ten years now and have my favorite spots such as Sammy’s Beach, Louse Point, and Orient Point to just name three of my favorite swimming spots. Let me stress that the blissfulness of hoping off the back of the boat into shallow cool water and looking to see amazing vista’s in every direction is exhilarating. Sometimes I feel I am off the Greek islands because the East End is just that beautiful. Not everyone has been able to see this part of the Hamptons, that is, looking at the land from the water.

If you don’t own a boat, rent one! I know of a few easy places to rent. In Montauk there is Henry Uihleins Marina, in business since 1957. In East Hampton are a few options such as Chartering the historic Mary Lloyd, or The East Hampton Yacht Company which specialized in small power boat rentals. On the North Fork there is the Strong’s Marine.

Once you try this new Hamptons trend you will be hooked. For me, there is no other way to swim on the hottest of days.
