The Classic was founded by Zev Norotsky, who thought with all the Hamptons charity benefits, their was a void in golf events, which he feels is the one sport that embodies the spirit of the Hamptons. “There are so many country clubs, people have their summer houses out there and golf is such a central theme but their was never anything that brought it together.”
With the U.S. Women’s Open at Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton later in the week, timing couldn’t be better for host Kerr who has been on Hamptons Golf Classic’s radar for years. But Kerr won’t be the only athele on the green, New York Jets linebacker Nick Mangold will also be in attendance. Norotsky joked, “I don’t want to take anything away from Cristie but she may have some competition for the longest drive.”
Each year the Classic identifies a “local hero” within the Hamptons community to honor. They are someone who is both successful in the business world but also philanthropic and give back to the community. This year Matthew and Susan Breitenbach were chosen. Norotsky noted, “I think the Breitenbach’s are a family that really made a name for themselves out East. We’re excited to share the platform with them and pay homage to their accomplishments.”
For Norotsky the day was meant to bring together executives from assorted industries to enjoy a fun camaraderie built on a sport which is loved by many. But the most important aspect of the day is the charity. Each year they identify an organization in need as well as working with the host’s charity. This year they made a donation to Cristie Kerr’s organization Birdies for Breast Cancer. Through Hamptons Golf Classic’s parent organization, Diamonds in The Rough, they also plan to donate funds for Hurricane Sandy relief through the Red Cross as well as to the Southampton Day Care Center.
