Southampton Arts Center kicks off 2024 with its inaugural exhibition, “Look at the Book,” commencing on Saturday, February 24 and running until May 4. Curated by SAC’s Executive Director, Christina Mossaides Strassfield, this multimedia showcase in SAC’s galleries features 33 artists, including Anita Balkun, Mary Ellen Bartley, Stephanie Brody-Lederman, and more, all delving into the themes of literacy and the symbolism of books in our culture.
The exhibition explores how contemporary artists have interacted with books, utilizing them as surfaces, structures, found objects, and philosophical guides. From accordion-style books to graphic novels, sculpture, and site-specific installations, the diverse works encompass various forms of book artistry.
Christina Mossaides Strassfield comments, “This exhibition delves into the evolving role of books in our digital age, the societal implications of book banning, and the ongoing defense of freedom of speech. It also addresses personal and societal literacy challenges, particularly in Suffolk County.”
SAC aims to foster community engagement through curator tours, panel discussions, community talks, and workshops, providing opportunities for dialogue on the exhibited works and their underlying themes.
Strassfield adds, “Books serve as conduits for knowledge, culture, and imagination, shaping our understanding of the world. In an era dominated by digital media, the absence of books prompts reflection on the reliability of information and its impact on ethics and daily life.”
The public program accompanying the exhibition offers sessions with Strassfield, artists such as Karyn Mannix, and renowned illustrator Barbara Thomas, ensuring a rich exploration of this vital topic.
