The Sag Harbor Historical Society (SHHS) will host its annual benefit on Saturday, June 25th from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Breakwater Yacht Club. Along with scenic views, guests will enjoy the infamous raw bar, hors d’oeuvres, and more.
This year’s party theme is Prescription for Fun, which celebrates the SHHS’ new exhibit on Dr. Edgar Miles, entitled Plants, Pills, and Poultices: The Life and Times of Dr. Edgar Miles, Sag Harbor’s 19th Century Medical Rebel.
“The Sag Harbor Historical Society is a community resource on local history and preservation, we are entirely volunteer run. Our Trustees have put together exhibits and tours documenting forgotten pieces of Sag Harbor’s history, and they answer hundreds of questions about Sag Harbor places and people every year,” said Andrea Meyer, a trustee of the Sag Harbor Historical Society. “This event is our only fundraiser each year. The proceeds from the event fund opening our historic house museum for educational tours, exhibits, and events.”

Dr. Edgar Miles was born in Cheshire, Connecticut in 1824 and was part of a medical reform movement across the country that was known as “Eclectic Medicine.” His emergence to the East End of Long Island was in 1845 with his 16-year-old bride, Frances. In Sag Harbor, Dr. Miles began his practice out of his house in Ligonee, which nowadays is better known as Brick Klin Road, Noyac Road, and Hildreth Street.
Dr. Miles grew his own herbs and medicinal plants on his Sag Harbor property, as well as on his orchard in Southold. By the end of his career, he served as the Officer of the Suffolk County Agriculture Society and one of the founders and promoters of the Sag Harbor and Hampton Park Fair Grounds (Mashashimuet Park). His passions and life flourished in Sag Harbor, where he is remembered for his advancements in medicine. Dr. Miles died in his Sag Harbor home at the age of 75 in 1899.

Apart from the Prescription for Fun party, the Society will also be continuing their summer tradition of “Fridays on the Porch.” It will commence on July 8th and run on July 22nd, August 5th, and August 19th from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the ACB House. Each evening will include a brief speaker or display, with refreshments. This is a free summer series, open to the public, with no reservations required. A $5 donation is suggested to offset the costs of refreshments.
Tickets to the Society’s annual benefit are $100 per person.
