Long Island Marine Purification Initiative To Host Summer Fundraiser

What would the Hamptons be without our ocean, bays, and ponds?

The Long Island Marine Purification Initiative (LIMPIA) will host its annual fundraising event at Moby’s in East Hampton on Saturday, July 23rd. Guests will enjoy dinner from 6:30 to 9 p.m. followed by drinks and dancing from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m.

LIMPIA is a registered 501c3 non-profit that was established to further the cause of clean water in the ocean, bays, and ponds of Long Island’s East End. Whether you are a year-round resident or summer visitor, the water plays a large role in your experience on the East End. LIMPIA hopes to preserve the beautiful waters surrounding our home towns. According to the organization, these waters are in far worse conditions than people realize, which is why they stepped in.

“There is certainly cause for concern: bodies of water throughout the East End, as our testing regime has shown, have suffered from a growing population matched with antiquated infrastructure and regulatory statute, and indeed, many are in danger,” explained Luke Weil, LIMPIA’s founder.

LIMPIA (which also means “clean” in Spanish) raises funds in support of clean water initiatives throughout the East End as well as engages with existing environmental groups and local government.

With our bodies of water in danger, this also means the animals that inhabit them are also at risk. The vast array of marine life, including fish, shellfish, hundreds of species of birds and other mammals are also threatened by the contamination, which includes pollutants, dated infrastructure, inadequate sewage management, and the impact of a growing population. As a human population, if we recognize these issues, we can work to alleviate the stresses on the aquatic communities. LIMPIA believes that it is our responsibility to recognize our faults and come up with effective solutions.
