Nelson Aspen’s Mad Men Destination Birthday in East Hampton

Lee Frydby Lee Fryd

Hugh Jackman was the first to respond to Nelson Aspen’s 50th birthday bash in the Hamptons. Jackman sent regrets, but still, we were impressed. Nelson’s a big celebrity down under. He’s been the on-air Show Business Editor for “Sunrise,” Australia’s #1 national morning show, for the past ten years. Nelson’s interviewed Jackman, “at least a dozen times,” and knows him socially.

American audiences know Nelson from three seasons on “TV Guide Television,” and as a contributor to “Extra,” “Access Hollywood,” and “Inside Edition.” Locally, he also contributes to WPIX morning news and Rita Cosby’s WOR Radio show. Aspen also hosts his own web series, “…@ NELSON’S!” blogs about Daytime TV (he appeared on and helped produce “Search for Tomorrow”) and has written enough celebrity-driven, entertaining books to get him featured as one of Elle Magazine’s “Good Time Gurus” alongside Martha Stewart, and to get his book publisher, Linda Williams, to fly half way around the world from Melbourne to fete his fiftieth!

Luan Gideon, Marcia McCabe and their former NBC Publicist Lee Fryd.

Ditto for “Sunrise” morning host Melissa Doyle from Sydney, who planned her vacation with husband John around the party. This was a serious “Destination” event. Actor Marc McClure (Jimmy Olsen in the first four “Superman” films, Dave McFly in “Back to the Future”) and wife Carol flew in from Palm Springs. WABC Meteorologist Amy Freeze drove in and out in time to do the early weekend weather reports. Former Fox News babe Louise Pennell flew in from LA. “Search for Tomorrow” stars Louan Gideon (Liza) came in from Asheville, NC, where she lives and is preparing a one woman show, and Marcia McCabe (Sunny) left her Westchester Country Club routine.

And if you’ve written “Let’s Dish Up a Dinner Party,” and “Dinner at Nelson’s: Cuisine and Conversation with the the Showbiz Guru,” you don’t do it half way. You give your party a theme and hold events all weekend. “I was born in 1963,” Aspen told Hamptons.com, “so I decided on a 1963/’Mad Men’ party.” Think madras jackets, shifts, and Babe Paley in Palm Beach. Signature cocktails: the Nelsontini (vodka with cucumber juice and watermelon) and Nifty 50s (a tequila concoction). Retro deviled eggs, pigs in a blanket, and shrimp cocktails were passed around. “We duplicated my favorite Grandma’s chocolate cake recipe, complete with Crisco!” Nelson said. Salmon and steak were entrees. Chita Phong Phanh, of Hamptonspeaceofmind.com catered. Tim Cronberger, of Halcyon Designs in Manhattan, curated the music. “First all 60s songs,” said Nelson. “And as the night wore on we moved into the 70s and 80s.”

For a man who wrote the autobiographical “Hollywood Insider: Exposed!” this occasion served as an inspiration for his next book: “Prime Time with Nelson Aspen: Middle Age is Only the Beginning” to be released in 2014.

It all took place at the East Hampton estate of Nelson’s best friend, financial services COO Glenn Finn. “Glenn and I met 30 years ago, at the first Tommy HIlfiger store, working as fashion consultants,’” Nelson told us. “In other words, we folded sweaters.”

Earlier that Saturday, guests had been invited to a Boot Camp workout at Indian Wells Beach, led by Hamptons trainer Erik Frederickson. The following day, Glenn hosted a “Hangover Bagels & Bloody Mary’s Brunch” that went ‘til dinner.

Louan Gideon performed two songs, Broadway tunes, with lyrics lauding Nelson. Glenn’s speech included a Nelson trivia contest. An obviously moved birthday boy took the mic: “If you’re here, it’s because I love you and I’m here because Glenn loves me. What a wonderful host. He and his partner Tim have made everything so pretty and so special. Glenn would give you the shirt off his back to any one of you because he’s that kind of a friend. He’s been my brother for 30 years.”

The next day, the 50 orange balloons Nelson’s parents sent could still be seen from the pool: floating in the guest room, when we overheard him on the phone with his Mom. “Every friend who’s every meant anything to me has been here,” he said. “It’s better than a funeral! And I owe it all to Glenn.”

“Nelson’s a good guy, just as simple as that,” said Aussie anchor Melissa Doyle. “One of the things Aussie audiences like is his level of respect for what he does and who he talks about.”

“I’ve never seen Nelson down under,” chimed in “Search” star Marcia McCabe. “But I’ve seen him in his shorts.”

21st Annual Hamptons Tea Dance Held At Nova’s Ark In Bridgehampton

21st Annual Hamptons Tea Dance Held At Nova's Ark In Bridgehampton

  • A few minutes past Amagansett Village, in that quiet pocket between the ocean and the bay, the new estate built by Bluefin, 137 Cross Highway to Devon, has intrigued me since the moment I saw it — a rare combination of proximity to the Village, craftsmanship, and design integrity in one of the most desirable areas on the East End.

Real-savvy Hamptons people know that Amagansett North is a quiet kind of magic—close enough to feel the Village’s heartbeat, far enough to hear the birds. If you think 137 Cross Highway to Devon is out of the way, then you don’t know Amagansett.

Four minutes to Amber Waves, under five to Balsam Farms and the Village, and less than ten to the ocean at Atlantic Avenue Beach.

Location, of course, is the headline anyway. The essentials—farm stands, ocean and bay beaches, golf and racquet clubs, coffee, restaurants, provisions—are so close they become afterthoughts: grab greens at Balsam, seafood at Stuarts, swing back for a baguette at Amber Waves, be home before the ice melts. It’s the rare setup where everyday errands feel like part of the vacation.

  • Saunders & Associates announced the kickoff of its 12th Annual Thanksgiving Donation Drive, renewing a cherished Hamptons tradition that supports local food banks from Westhampton to Montauk. This year, the firm has set an ambitious goal: $50,000 in monetary donations to be distributed directly to community partners serving year-round families across the East End.

All donations made to the GoFundMe will be matched dollar for dollar by Andrew & Colleen Saunders. Every dollar contributed will go entirely to food pantries in the Hamptons, where the need remains critical.

Last year’s drive surpassed its monetary goal, powered by more than 100 contributions from Saunders agents and the wider Hamptons community. Those funds helped ensure local families had access to essential resources during the holiday season—a critical time of year for many.

In the years since COVID-19, Saunders & Associates has shifted to monetary contributions, enabling local pantries to purchase essentials in bulk that their clients need most. Continuing a commitment from last year, Colleen and Andrew Saunders will personally match every dollar donated, effectively doubling the impact of each gift.

“Year twelve is a major milestone, and a mirror on the Hamptons community at its best,” said Steve Glick, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Saunders & Associates. “It reflects the generosity of a community that shows up for one another beyond the summer season. When you give to this drive, you help neighbors directly and immediately. Every contribution is multiplied, and every dollar goes where it’s needed most.”

Saunders & Associates’ agents and staff—who live and work in the Hamptons year-round—will once again champion the effort, rallying clients, friends, and local businesses to participate throughout the Thanksgiving season.

  • Dust off your favorite witch’s hat and opt for a paddleboard instead of a broom for Paddle Diva & Wych’s Bloom’s inaugural Witches Paddle on Wednesday, October 29, from 4–6 p.m. at Paddle Diva (10 Boat Yard Rd., East Hampton, NY). A portion of the proceeds will go to the Surfrider Foundation’s Eastern Long Island Chapter and its efforts to protect the world’s oceans, waves, and beaches through dedicated activism.

We’ve all seen Witches Paddles grace our social media feeds, and now you can partake in the spooky fun! This tradition combines Halloween vibes with the healing power of nature as you glide and take in the beautiful Three Mile Harbor views.

Gina Bradley excitedly shared, “I am thrilled to be hosting this at Paddle Diva’s permanent location inside Swan’s Marina (formerly Vanderveer’s). This kind of paddle has been on my mind for many years, as I’ve seen them in all parts of the world, and it looks so cool seeing all the witches gracefully gliding along the water. This is particularly exciting because we’ve joined forces with Wych’s Bloom, a local herbal apothecary brand, and Surfrider to raise money and awareness for ocean and clean bay initiatives that are crucial for our waters on the East End of Long Island.”

“As an herbalist, Samhain, or Halloween, offers a special occasion for me to celebrate the healers who came before us to teach the wisdom of the plants in our region. I had seen people gathering for Witches Paddles all over the country, and as a surfer, I connected instantly with these events. When I texted Gina the idea, she was immediately in. That’s what I love about the women on the East End—they’re always up for an adventure,” shared Wych’s Bloom owner and Surfrider Foundation board member Christina Winters.

Join us in taking part in this one-of-a-kind event! Craft a witch’s outfit and set sail at the inaugural Witches Paddle for a great cause.
