The North Fork Community Theatre’s production of “Wonder of the World” promises a hilarious and entertaining evening of local theater. The show, running until Feb. 4 at NFCT in Mattituck, is a comedic masterpiece by David Lindsay-Abaire, directed by Robert P. Horn, with Assistant Director Gillian Schroeder and Producer Kim Cappiello. Presented through a special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., it’s a theatrical experience not to be missed.
Set against the backdrop of Niagara Falls in the present day, “Wonder of the World” utilizes electronic video sets of the famous falls, creating a spellbinding atmosphere enhanced by various video effects. NFCT deserves applause for incorporating this cutting-edge technology seamlessly, adding a distinct panache to the production. Director Robert P. Horn’s astute selection of complementary videos amplifies the playwright’s words and the actors’ actions.
April Keough, portraying Cass, steals the spotlight with a phenomenal performance, carrying the show effortlessly. Her nuanced skill set and commanding speaking voice captivate the audience during the play’s zany dialogues. Evelyn Lubrano, as the suicidal, alcohol-loving Lois, adds another layer of humor with her dry delivery and stage magnetism. Evan Shure-Muthig, in the role of Cass’s husband, Kip, showcases his talent through the character’s eccentric traits, leaving a lasting impression.
Linda Pentz, a long-time NFCT favorite, delivers a standout performance as Karla. Her acting prowess, coupled with hilarious punch lines and expressive facial expressions, makes her a “ticket” all on her own. Robert Taylor, playing Captain Mike, contributes timely moments that, in turn, steal scenes with his sincerity and grit.
Special mention goes to Dee Martin for her exceptional work as Janie. With the aid of her clown costume and makeup, she mesmerizes the audience and takes control of pivotal scenes. Michael P. Horn, a consistently top-notch performer for almost two decades, shines in his role as Glenn, adding another feather to his cap.
Victoria Shure-Muthig as Barbara/Waitress and Andy O’Brien as the Pilot have standout moments under the bright lights, showcasing their individual brilliance.
Behind every successful production are the unsung heroes working behind the scenes. Kudos and accolades to David Sheer for lighting, John Lovett for sound, Andy O’Brien as stage manager, Stephen Ness handling props, Katrina Lovett as costume consultant, and Addison Heck on the stage crew.
Attending a show at the North Fork Community Theater means experiencing the best of community theater in one cohesive statement. This tight-knit theater group consistently supports local performing arts, creating a noticeable energy and a direct outpouring of love from the audience to the actors on stage, regardless of the production.
