The Robert Cray Band is set to take the stage at Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center on Saturday, March 19th at 8:00 p.m.
Robert Cray is a Blues Hall of Famer with five Grammys, twenty acclaimed studio albums, and several live albums, his style ranging from soul to R&B to blues and American roots. The Robert Cray Band’s latest album That’s What I Heard dropped on February 28th, and he says that those in attendance at the Westhampton Beach show can expect to hear some of their new material as well as long-time favorites!
The Robert Cray Band’s start in the music industry can be traced back to 1977 when they played with Albert Collins at the San Francisco Blues Festival. Robert noted that after the show they met Bruce Bromberg and Dennis Walker who asked if they wanted to make a record. That record was recorded in 1978, and Dennis and Bruce went on to produce the band’s next several albums at the beginning of their long and acclaimed career.
Robert spoke about his earliest influences ranging from The Beatles to Jimi Hendrix to Sam Cooke, BB King, and many others, saying that he has so many early influences it’s too hard to name them all. The Robert Cray Band plays a combination of different music that Robert grew up listening to. He describes their style as “rocking soul and blues,” and says that he was able to cultivate his own unique sound by “just doing what you do and then writing what you feel.”
When asked what it means to him to be able to perform and express himself through music, Robert said, “It’s the most exciting part of my day. It’s a great way to culminate the end of the day playing to an audience. It’s really cathartic for me.”
The Robert Cray Band features Richard Cousins on bass, Dover Weinberg on keyboards, Terence F. Clark on drums, and Steve Jordan on drums and percussion. They have played many times at Westhampton Beach over the years and have always enjoyed the audience that comes out to see them. Robert said of the Hamptons attendees, “They are always an exciting and attentive audience. It’s great to play for an audience like that.”
The Robert Cray Band is sure to put on an unforgettable show with their distinguished sound and the energy they bring to the stage, making for a spectacular evening in the Hamptons!
