If you’re a Southampton homeowner and the 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills is already on your radar, here’s the key update: the Town is allowing shorter rentals for a limited window in June—as long as you’re properly permitted and you follow the minimum stay.
From Monday, June 8, 2026, through Wednesday, June 24, 2026, homeowners with a valid Town of Southampton rental permit may rent their permitted home for short-term stays (14 days or less)—but not for fewer than three (3) days.
That means eligible bookings during this window can be 3 to 14 days.
The Town has classified the U.S. Open as a “regionally significant event” and expects that standard transient housing options won’t be sufficient to handle the influx. This temporary adjustment is meant to increase available inventory—without permanently changing Southampton’s rental framework.
This is not an “open season” change. The Town’s flexibility is tied to compliance.
To take advantage of the U.S. Open window, you’ll need:
-
A valid rental permit for the home during that time period
-
Rentals that fall within June 8–June 24, 2026
-
Bookings that meet the 3-day minimum stay (and stay at 14 days or less)
Everything else in the Town’s rental law still applies.
If you’re considering renting for that period, don’t wait until June to get organized – contact a local real estate agent today to make sure you are ready for U.S. Open in 2026.
“We’re excited to welcome the U.S. Open back to Shinnecock Hills, and it’s great to see the Town creating a sensible path for homeowners who want to rent during this unique window,” said Steve Glick, Senior VP of Advertising & Marketing at Saunders & Associates. “If you’re considering a rental, reach out to a Saunders agent—we can help facilitate all of the ins and outs of a Hamptons rental, from pricing and positioning to permits and logistics.”
