Stories that Last: Gifting an Heirloom by illumin8 films

David Andrewsby David Andrews
in Entertainment, Trending
Home Entertainment

Storytelling is a gift, and like any gift, it needs to be shared. Sharing a story is a blessing, a mitzvah, but listening is its own act of appreciation, respect, and, often, love.

The gift of storytelling is multifaceted and manifold in expression. Some of us are gifted storytellers; some have fantastic experience and insight to share; others have curiosity and determination to unearth and discover stories untold. Still, all stories share a common need: an audience.

illumin8 Films believes a well-told story creates an audience. They offer a way to gift the power of storytelling—creating fully personalized, 30- to 45-minute cinematic documentary films that honor a life and invite others in. These are stories produced with care, depth, and, above all else, heart—crafted to be shared, remembered, and cherished.

The Power of Storytelling

As a writer, I think illumin8 film’s work is as exciting as it is essential. Stories matter. Now more than ever—in the face of artificial everything—authenticity is at an all-time high.  When I found out that illumin8 films was coming to the Hamptons this summer to work on a documentary, I knew it was a story I wanted to share. After interviewing their team, I can’t wait to reveal more about their latest Legacy Documentary set here on the East End.

In short, i8 films offer the Gift of a Lifetime by creating lasting heirlooms, storytelling capsules ready to engage and captivate today and for generations to come. Founder and Ceo Barry Reese tells me, “We started this company with a simple belief: everyone has a story worth telling…These aren’t just films, they’re digital heirlooms.”

The illumin8 Story

Based in the Northeast, the story of illumin8’s Legacy Documentaries starts with a short film Barry Reese made for his mother. But, don’t take my word for it – check out the documentary here!

After over a decade of experience honing their craft across multiple media, their team has earned considerable recognition. ” It has given us a language of trust and artistry. We approach every legacy film with the same balance of storytelling, design, and technical precision…We love what we do because we know these films will outlive us, carrying the essence of a family forward.”

As Barry reflects on the company’s breadth of work, it becomes clear just how deeply varied—and meaningful—their projects are: “In one film, we explored the legacy of a tailor in Pittsburgh, weaving his craftsmanship with his parents’ journey as Italian immigrants. In another, we followed a Canadian entrepreneur’s rise from humble beginnings. Perhaps most moving of all, we captured the reunion of families separated for over sixty years.”

Each project is different, but their passion remains the same: honoring real people and meaningful stories with timeless care.

The illumin8 Approach

While making a full-scale professional documentary requires considerable coordination and skill, the process is seamless for those interviewed. illumin8 handles all the legwork as producers – pre-production, digitization, on-set crew and direction, editing, and post-production. All of it. “It’s easy for our subjects. Essentially, we need one full day of attention. The interviews go as long as the subject is comfortable—everybody is different.”

After meeting the illumin8 team, I was blown away by their “we can get it done” spirit and energy. More than efficiency, they bring empathy and know how to put people at ease to encourage reflection. “Collaboration is at the heart of what we do, but we’ve designed our process so that it never feels like a burden. Our clients are busy people, so we take on the heavy lifting. That said, their input is essential.”

Every story is unique, but the goal is constant:  that the gift-recipient and subject feel seen. “Our goal is for [our subject] to recognize that their most authentic self has been captured and preserved in a way that honors their life and legacy.”

THE PROCESS

illumin8’s Emmy-winning filmmakers bring the same artistry you’d find on Netflix or ESPN to deeply personal stories. There is no single formula or template for a good story. “We’re a team of seasoned storytellers who know how to honor a life, a family, or a moment with the same artistry and intention we’d bring to any major production.”

Production usually takes just one day, filmed in meaningful locations, and subjects have total creative control over the style and substance of the documentary. “Our process is designed to feel effortless because, at its heart, it’s simply a conversation. We guide families through a rediscovery of old photographs and films, digitizing and preserving them as part of the journey, before stepping into film.

“Nothing leaves our hands until it feels true and deeply loved.”

PRESENTATION MATTERS

Beyond the film itself, illumin8 gives the recipient of this gift the full treatment of a movie. That is the point: to apply the artistry, presentation, and stylization of cinema to a life, revealing just how remarkable and singular that life truly is.

Alongside the heirloom documentary comes everything you’d expect from a true production: full interview footage, digitized archival footage, a keepsake coffee table book, a promotional reveal, and travel. The finished film lives on as a beautifully crafted video book, preserved for any format, including streaming for faraway loved ones.

Each layer of presentation underscores that this is a complete storytelling experience, adorned with appreciation and imbued with intent.

Adam Warner, Senior Producer, adds, “Passing down generations of family history in a way that your grandkids will be able to understand. They may not read a book, but they’ll watch a movie with you. Film and video can bring together a real feeling that is tangible and approachable for generations to come.”

STORYTELLING

At their core, the i8 team are storytellers. One minute with Barry and you can hear his passion for stories (he can spin a yarn himself). His pride and excitement are refreshing – driven by a genuine curiosity and appreciation for a good story. Their films speak louder than the filmmakers themselves – that’s by design. Great storytelling starts with listening and attention – their commitment to understanding their subjects is ironclad.

The Hamptons are certainly a cinematic place, but what draws i8 films to the East End is deeper than sunsets and farmstands. “What draws us to the Hamptons creatively is the deep sense of tradition and family… These rituals, passed down and shared, are exactly the stories we aim to preserve.”

Among those drawn to illumin8’s mission is Carl Radke of Bravo’s Summer House. Known for his openness and candor on screen, Radke partnered with the team to produce a deeply personal documentary. His collaboration underscores just how powerful these films can be, whether for a public figure or for any family who wishes to preserve their legacy.

“Everyone Has a Story”

Telling a life story can seem like a big undertaking, but it’s not a story until it’s shared.  To that end, illumin8’s mission and methods are simple: Bringing the past to the present for generations in your own voice.

You don’t need to be a celebrity to have a story worth telling. i8 has “experience working with everyone from billionaires and world-class athletes to descendants of iconic historical figures. But what unites our work is not the fame of our subjects—it’s our passion for uncovering the untold.”

It’s not uncommon for the recipients of an illumin8 documentary to be overwhelmed with emotion.

“Everybody has a story. We’re taught to think that our stories aren’t special – but in reality, when you start telling that story, you realize how special every life is.”

FILMS > CONTENT

As filmmakers, illumin8 films is not content with creating content – they are artists, professionals, storytellers who respect the enduring craft of narration.

In a world of instantly shareable, AI-generated, and “viral” moments engineered by corporations, illumin8 Films have gone all-in on a decidedly slower, more considered approach to storytelling – making heirlooms that endure and telling stories that last. “Above all, we are storytellers. We believe every life is a tapestry of moments—some grand, others quiet—all deserving of honor.” Unlike a viral video or a meme, good stories take time to tell and linger long after they are told.

Stories, in their hands, become heirlooms. Emotional, visual, lasting.

LUXURY AS AN EXPERIENCE

Stories are not disparate and decontextualized moments to scroll past—they are life in miniature and at large, fractals revealed in everyday events, memories, and moments; then, expanded from a bird’s-eye view, there is the story of a life.

“In a world of fleeting content and disposable media, investing in an illumin8 film is about choosing something that truly lasts. Gift-givers are increasingly trading in luxury items, like watches or handbags, for experiences that carry emotional permanence. An illumin8 film is a $15K gift that becomes a digital heirloom…for an anniversary, a milestone birthday… it answers the deeper question so many families are asking: ‘What will we leave behind?’”

WHATS NEXT

As film technology evolves, i8 is focused on scaling without sacrificing soul. “We can now produce more films for more families, without ever compromising the artistry.” They’re expanding into milestone moments, bringing their legacy-driven approach to larger life events. “It’s a natural extension of what we do.”

One subject said, “If I died tomorrow, I’m happy knowing my story is out there for the people I love.” That’s the kind of impact they strive for—and why this is such a meaningful gift.

The experience for the recipient is always at the center of illumin8’s work. “We hope they feel deeply seen and proud to share their story. Our goal is for them to recognize that their most authentic self has been preserved in a way that honors their life and legacy. It’s a piece of family history that will live on for generations.” In the end, that sense of lasting pride and meaningful continuity is the true gift illumin8 strives to give.

We’re all bombarded with New Year, New Me posts on Instagram and TikTok as health takes center stage in everyone’s 2026 goals. Many choose to participate in “Dry January,” a challenge that encourages participants to take a break from alcohol. Non-alcoholic alternatives are also a great option for those who want to join the bar crawl without the stigma of holding a water bottle. With help from our friends at Kidd Squid Brewery, we sampled a variety of options at their tasting room in Sag Harbor. Here are our top picks.

1. Wölffer Estate: Spring in a Bottle Rose

You can’t go anywhere in the Hamptons without grabbing a glass of Wolffer’s iconic Rosé. Don’t fret! You can still enjoy the iconic, vibrant, fruity taste with their non-alcoholic version.

Tasting notes: It’s no surprise that it is a favorite in The Hamptons. The lack of alcohol doesn’t affect the rich, elegant rose, peach, and apple notes. This is a delicious, fresh, sparkling rosé.

2. Hedlum

Is a locally owned company that produces crispy non-alcoholic beers that perfectly mirror their alcoholic counterparts. I tried their Easy Down Lager, and it was perfect!

Tasting notes: It pours out like a beer with a nice frothy top layer. It is crisp and smooth and reminds me of a Sapporo.

3. Aplós

Another locally owned company that produces non-alcoholic drinks crafted by award-winning mixologists. I fell in love with their credo, “Life should be sipped slowly.” I tried their Chili Margarita and loved the sparkling citrus notes with a bit of a kick. It’s infused with adaptogens and nootropics, which are thought to reduce stress, elevate your mood, and overall just deliver that perfect chill for any social setting.

Tasting notes: Crisp and tangy, with very strong citrus notes, this reminded me of kombucha. It was very refreshing.

  • When Jesse Bongiovi launched Hampton Water Wine Co. with his dad, Jon Bon Jovi, in 2018, he helped redefine what modern rosé could look and feel like—sun-soaked, effortless, and rooted in moments shared with the people you love.

Now, with the growth of Lily Pond Group, he’s expanding that vision far beyond the bottle. Influenced by years spent in the Hamptons’ uniquely relaxed and refined culture, Jesse’s approach to brand-building is all about capturing a feeling: the blend of ease, taste, and connection that defines a perfect summer day out East.

With Lily Pond Group’s emerging portfolio—including Hampton Water, Five Springs, and Mezcal Mezul—Jesse is shaping brands that stand for more than just good drinks. They’re grounded in storytelling, authenticity, and community, with the kind of cultural resonance that turns a product into a lifestyle.

Jesse spoke more about how he got started, how the Hamptons informed his approach, and what he sees on the horizon for the next generation of lifestyle brands.

When did you come up with the concept for Hampton Water and decide to move forward with it?

JB: We saw an opportunity to change the narrative around rosé and the idea of “rosé season.” We wanted something sophisticated but still fun and easygoing, something that reflected the lifestyle we love. When we connected with Gérard Bertrand, it all clicked. The quality in the juice matched the story we wanted to tell, and that’s when we knew we had something special.

  • What began as a shared dream between two young farming apprentices has grown into a year-round nonprofit that feeds, teaches, and welcomes thousands of people each season. Today, co-founders Amanda Merrow and Katie Baldwin continue to nurture the land while carrying out their mission to educate and inspire through food and farming.

From securing ownership of their farmland to expanding their programs, opening a year-round market, and welcoming visitors to explore the property, Amber Waves has become an essential piece of the East End’s agricultural and cultural landscape. Amanda and Katie spoke about their journey, the mission that continues to guide them, and the vision behind one of the most meaningful community-driven farms on Long Island.

What core mission drives the farm today, and how has that mission evolved since the beginning?

Amanda & Katie: We met in 2008 while completing a farming apprenticeship at Quail Hill Farm where we both discovered our shared love of farming. By that July, we were already dreaming up ways to continue farming together in Amagansett. When we founded Amber Waves Farm, our vision was to build something greater than ourselves—something that would outlive us. Our original idea, the “Amagansett Wheat Project,” grew out of a daydream to create a “pizza farm,” and our name, Amber Waves, pays homage to grain production—a line from the song “America the Beautiful”. From the beginning, we chose to be a nonprofit because our mission—to teach and connect people through food and farming—has always been at the heart of what we do.
