The dreary days of winter can take a toll on one’s mood, but one Hamptons-based gallery is hoping to keep the seasonal cheer and joyful spirit that the holidays bring alive by invigorating the start of 2016 with bold colors. “Artists who work and live on the East End will light up the dark days of winter,” explained curator Arlene Bujese about Southampton Cultural Center’s latest exhibit, Winter Light: East End Artists. “It is a group show with a variety of approaches to the making of art: painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture, and works in mixed media: fabric, found objects, and more.”

The show’s goal is to enhance the lackluster time of the year, when one is often stuck inside due to excessive snowfall and frigid temperatures (although we’ve been lucky not to have either yet), with vibrant and imaginative works by over 20 artists, all of which call the East End home. The pieces’ motifs include non-objective, abstract expression, nature, figuration, and landscape.
Featured artists will include Shari Abramson, Calvin Albert, Marcel Bally, Monica Banks, Deborah Black, John Bell, Stephanie Brody-Lederman, Darlene Charneco, Pamela Collins Focarino, Josh Dayton, Mary Daunt, A.G. Duggan, Pamela Collins Focarino, Carol Hunt, Tracy Jamar, Margaret Kerr, Setha Low, Christa Maiwald, Fulvio Massi, Roy Nicholson, Louise Peabody, Alexander Russo, Roseanne Schwab, Walter Schwab, and Dan Welden.
“Works range from representational to abstract, but all shine in their own way,” explained Bujese.
Winter Light: East End Artists will debut on Tuesday, December 29th, and an opening reception will be held on Saturday, January 16th from 5 to 7 p.m. The exhibit will be on view through Tuesday, February 16th.
