Don Lenzer Honors Sag Harbor Cinema With “Sag Noir” Project

Cinematographer/photographer Don Lenzer will debut his new photographic portfolio titled Sag Noir, honoring the iconic Sag Harbor Cinema, during a reception at Julie Keyes Gallery on Friday, June 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. This boxed set of 14 works represents a loving observation of the old Cinema. After the fire of December 16, 2016 nearly destroyed it, Lenzer spent long and careful hours going through the Cinema, finding an eerie beauty in its devastation.

Lenzer shared his thoughts on the project, saying, “Sag Noir has brought me more joy and satisfaction than I could have possibly dreamed. Out of destruction and loss came a lesson in generosity, kindness and community spirit.”

This magnificent set of images, printed by artist/photographer Jane Martin with a frontispiece forward by Lenzer, is being presented in a clamshell box produced by the great bookbinder Paul Vogel. Each image is a loose photograph measuring 17 x 22″, suitable for separate framing. The entire boxed set is priced to start with initial sales at $7,000, increasing to $7,500 as the edition of 20 sells out, and proceeds after production costs will be entirely donated to the Sag Harbor Cinema rebuilding effort.

The Sag Harbor Cinema Arts Center was established in 2017 and, after months of fundraising, purchased the Cinema that same year to take charge of its rebuilding and operations. Their mission is to restore the Sag Harbor Cinema and preserve the showing of independent, foreign, and documentary films on the East End of Long Island. Education, programming, and outreach for people of all ages will ensure that the Cinema is here for future generations to enjoy.
