Longtime East End arts scene fixture Arlene Bujese is once again rounding up a talented group of fellow artists to be featured in what has evolved into her annual guest residency at Kathryn Markel Gallery in Bridgehampton.
Connections, which Bujese curated, will debut on Saturday, February 1. The 2020 iteration will boast works from Jennifer Cross, Josh Dayton, Robin Gianis, Margery Gosnell-Qua, Carol Hunt, Dennis Leri, Christa Maiwald, Fulvio Massi, Gabriele Raacke, Dan Rizzie, Aurelio Torres, and Hans Van de Bovenkamp.
“The exhibition comprises artists represented by the Arlene Bujese Gallery – 1994 – 2006, in East Hampton,” Bujese explained. “Of the original group, Josh Dayton will show new paintings, Carol Hunt, a new woven fibre work and drawings, Dennis Leri, welded sculpture and wall works, Gabriele Raacke, paintings on glass, and Hans Van de Bovenkamp, welded bronze sculpture.”

In addition to the artists that the former gallery owner has had a longstanding relationship with, there will also be works from those that Bujese has encountered more recently.
“Newer associations are Jennifer Cross, paintings, Robin Gianis, fired clay works, Margery Gosnell-Qua, paintings informed by nature, Christa Maiwald, stitchery on canvas, Fulvio Massi, abstract painting, Dan Rizzie, collage and drawing works on paper, and Aurelio Torres, mixed media sculpture,” Bujese said.
“Arlene Bujese has a specific talent collecting artists working in different media. It makes this exhibition special,” Raacke explained.
The exhibition will encompass painting, sculpture, drawings, and prints that utilize paint, welded steel and bronze, collage, clay, woven fibre, glass, or stitchery.
“As new connections are made each year, this has become an annual event, through the generosity of Kathryn Markel who lends her gallery for this show,” Bujese noted. “There are continual discoveries as one looks around during the year.”
Artistic styles range from representational to abstract to impressionistic to minimal, and more.
“This exhibition also presents the opportunity for area galleries to discover new talent and offer representation on a broader level,” Bujese concluded.
Connections will be on display through Sunday, March 1. An opening reception will take place on Saturday, February 1, from 5 to 7 p.m.
