On Saturday, December 9, Bay Street Theater is hosting “A Rockin’ Holiday Dance” featuring Joe Lauro and the HooDoo Loungers, and Joe Delia & Thieves. The event kicks off at 8 p.m. and will feature holiday classics, both in the form of music and film.

Joe Lauro of the HooDoo Loungers, a “New Orleans Mardi Gras style party band,” describes this dance as a “really fun Christmas show that will start off with some really great classic Christmas film clips just to get everyone in the mood.” Aside from being an accomplished musician, Lauro is an avid (and professional) collector of classic music and film clips. He founded Historic Films in the nineties, which will be providing the clips to be featured at this year’s holiday dance.
One can expect fun dance music combined with some “holiday stuff” performed in the musical style of the bands. Before each performance, footage of past holiday television specials will be played for the audience. One can expect appearances from Bing Crosby and Dean Martin.
“We just want to get everyone in the mood, it’ll be a rock-and-roll Christmas for sure!” shared Lauro.
The HooDoo Loungers formed around seven years ago. Originally “The Hoo Dat Loungers,” Lauro had to change the name due to trademark issues. “Our members are from all over–our singer is from Texas and now lives in New Jersey,” said Lauro. The band also boasts two vocalists with backgrounds in gospel singing, a horn section, and five singers in total. Lauro describes the HooDoo Loungers as a variety show within a 9-piece band. “We are kind of inspired by the music of New Orleans so a lot of our original music and stuff we play has a New Orleans feel and spirit to it.”
This Saturday, Morris Goldberg – an accomplished saxophonist who has worked with Paul Simon and Harry Belafonte – will be playing the saxophone and clarinet. “He’s from South Africa and he is one of the great, great reed players in the area, in the world,” said Lauro.
Joe Delia & Thieves, a rock band, was formed in 2011. It is led by Joe Delia, the well-known composer who has toured with Stevie Wonder and Pat Benatar, among others.
“I’m really delighted to be playing with Joe Delia who, in his own right, is a very well-known and a fine keyboard player,” added Lauro. “We love playing at Bay Street Theater because it’s my hometown and we’ve had a long tradition of doing some really fun shows there.”
Tickets for the event are $25 if purchased in advance, and $30 if purchased on the day of the event.
