The Parrish Art Museum will hold the second edition of Gesture Jam, an innovative adult figure drawing class on Friday, July 18, 2014, at 6 p.m. Local artist and educator, Andrea Cote will preside over this class, where participants will sketch live models in an lively environment.
This summer’s Gesture Jam offers two new features. Firstly, the class will be held outdoors on the terrace, and secondly, it will include the live musicians, Nicolas Letman-Burtanovic on the bass, and Sean Sonderegger on the saxophone. The models are local dancers, Adam and Gail Baranello.

Similar to the premiere Gesture Jam that was put on last winter, Gesture Jam on the Terrace, extends beyond the classic figure drawing class into a more theatrical experience that includes costumed models and live music. There will be refreshments available provided by the Parrish’s Café. The program’s environment is supposed to feel social as well as educational, dubbed “edu-tainment,” by Parrish Curator of Special Projects, Andrea Grover.
“Imagine going home with drawings that look like you’ve been to some sort of psychedelic cabaret, and feeling that way too,” noted Grover. “Andrea Cote’s Gesture Jam classes have just that effect.”
Gesture Jam was developed by Andrea Cote exclusively for the Parrish Art Museum, in combination with Grover. Attendees will assemble on the Mildred C. Brinn Terrace with their materials and sketch the models in various poses, under the guidance of Andrea Cote. The program is open to any levels of artistic skill and interest and offers participants quite an array of ways to participate. They can actively draw the figures, or passively watch the artists and performers at work.
Those participating in Gesture Jam are asked to bring their own sketchpads and drawing materials. The seating and tables will be provided, however easels are not available. The program is included with admission to the museum, which is $10 for the general public, and free for Members, children and students.
The Parrish Art Museum is located at 279 Montauk Highway in Water Mill. For more information, call 631-283-2118 or visit parrishart.org.
