Hamptons Museum To Embark On An Exploration Of Food In Relation To The Art World

“Advances in food production technology are changing the way we think about, prepare, and consume meals,” noted Andrea Grover, the Century Arts Foundation Curator of Special Projects at the Parrish Art Museum.

On Friday, November 6th at 6 p.m., independent curator Amanda McDonald Crowley will explore how these evolutions influence the world of art during ArtFoodTech at the Parrish. During the lecture, McDonald Crowley, who creates cross-disciplinary new media art events and exhibitions, many of which feature meals and experimental cuisine, will cover specific pieces of art and occasions that have affected her exploration of food technology, as well as its bearing on visual artists.

“Amanda’s program will reveal how these advances are inspiring artists as they question the future of our food systems,” explained Grover.

ArtFoodTech will include two works by Emilie Baltz: Circuit of the Senses, and RGB Cocktail Party. Circuit was a 120 person dinner party hosted at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts galleries. For the soiree, Baltz converted the location into a whimsical concourse where attendees dined on interactive dishes that were influenced by the five human senses, like roasting marshmallows and hot dogs on singing grills, nibbling from bowls spinning on translucent ice tables, eating from a live table and feasting on clouds of rosemary vapor. Guests were encouraged to use their senses and touch, taste, smell, see and listen together throughout each course as a group.

The presentation will also feature Stefani Bardin’s M2A™: The Fantastic Voyage, a captivating installation centered on the first ever clinical study to use the M2A™ Capsule and SmartPill wireless, microscopic gastroenterology tools used to discover how the human body reacts to processed versus whole foods.

Other works and happenings included in the program are Free Range Grain by Critical Art Ensemble/Beatriz da Costa and Shyh-shiun Shyu, FoAM, future fabulators, and Matthew Moore’s Lifecycles and Urban Transplanter.

Admission to ArtFoodTech is $10, but free for Parrish members, children, and students.
