“As a professional photographer, I am fascinated by the faces and forms of my fellow human beings,” shared John Madere.
On Wednesday, September 2nd, The Surf Lodge is hosting a sunset viewing of Madere’s short documentary, “Montauk.” The film includes interviews with 20 of Montauk’s surfers, fishermen, summer denizens, locals, transplants and others, who have grown to adore “The End.” “Montauk” took home the award for Best Documentary at the NYC Downtown Short Film Festival.
Attendees will also be able to check out the filmmaker and photographer’s Tidal Anatomy series, which features local surfers and the sea. “Tidal Anatomy is a project that grew out of more than thirty years of my photographing people all over the world,” said Madere. “It combines my love of portraiture with another passion that emerged later in my life — surfing.”

Tidal Anatomy is Madere’s personal and introspective journey in search of the beauty, dignity, and mystery of his fellow surfers. Using nature as a backdrop, the series shows the intense connection between our lives and the landscapes around us.
The evening will kickoff with a performance from local Nancy Atlas at 5 p.m.
